arrived swiftly and in perfect condition. I haven't read it yet although I'm assured it's useful but what i was most impressed with was the price our university book shop is so overpriced, I've told so many people to buy this book here instead. I'd give it 5 stars but i should probably wait until I've read it first.

I had read the 3rd edition when I decided to use this textbook for teaching purpose this year. However, having ordered the fourth copy, I am quite disappointed at all the material that has been cut out of this book. The previous edition, even though longer, made a lot more sense and was much better. This paper quality of this edition is also awful (adding tons of weight to the book). The accompanying website does not provide much help in terms of additional resources. Would be very happy if the 3rd edition was updated (but not reduced as this edition).

The book is a great introductory textbook with a substantial historical outlook as well as an emphasis on the developing world as opposed to the Eurocentrism of many other books. It does not go at length about theories in a separate chapter, but incorporates the theories into the discussion of historical epochs and/or issues to be discussed. This makes it great for introductory courses as it connects the theories with the issues and dynamics involved for the students to have an idea as to where they are standing. The only gap in the book is the gender aspect and possibly a discussion of identity, although that scarcely finds a place in a GPE book. All in all, highly recommended.
