My flat has two very very old storage heaters that are very high wattage and cost literally pounds a day to run, which I just can't afford, and they don't even get that hot, so I have been looking for a low wattage heater that is fairly small and unobtrusive and yet gives out a good bit of heat.
The reviews for this one sounded fab and it is also a lot cheaper here on Amazon than other places (thanks Amazon!), so I bought one straight away.
It's fantastic! It is smaller than I thought it would be (which is good!!) and very lightweight. I was expecting it to be quite chunky depth-wise but it is only about 2 inches deep from back to front so if you were to fix it to the wall it wouldn't stick out very much.
I like the fact that it is long and low rather than normal radiator-sized, as it means that it looks a lot better, blends in with decor and doesn't get in the way.
It's about a metre long and comes with sturdy plastic feet for floor standing, and metal wall brackets and rawlplugs etc if you want to fix it to the wall. The power cord is about a metre.
I intend to move it from room to room as we need it; when we are in the lounge it will be in there with us, and I'll take it into the bedroom at night when we go to sleep.
It gives out a great heat! For something so small I was very very impressed with how quickly it warmed up and how warm it actually got. Really looking forward to switching it on in the evening and having cosy rooms!
The low wattage is great, it means that we can have it switched on at night and wake up warm, and it will cost next to nothing, unlike my storage heaters that cost the best part of a tenner each day just to keep the room vaguely warm. (well they would cost the best part of a tenner if we had them on - I don't even bother putting them on because they're so costly!) This heater will be an absolute godsend to us I think, keeping us nice and cosy this winter!
Would definitely recommend this to anyone, especially people who live in flats and who have smaller rooms in their homes, and people who are on a tight budget and need something that doesn't use tons of electricity.
Would also like to thank Amazon for really speedy delivery (ordered Sunday night, was delivered Tuesday morning) and use of excellent couriers who kept me updated via email and phone about my parcel's progress every day!
I gave this 4 stars as it has no thermostat (we used a cheap wall mounted central heating thermosat to give control) which is a shame. Also and more importantly it came with a plug which contained a 13A fuse. Seriously?! For a 2A heater! The 0.5mm cable would melt before the fuse blew. Naughty, naughty Mr Manufacturer! That's a CE mark fail. Obviously a 3A or even 5A would be plenty. I suggest you check yours when you buy this heater.
Ok the serious bit.
Was having trouble comfortably and cheaply heating this cold little back computer room even with a 700w Chico or a 500w Bambino in addition to a 2kw fan heater.
From reading around the comments I got a tip about this Glen and thought it might be the solution as the coldness of the room was coming from the cold window and wall side and the other heaters were a little on the bulky side (well not the Bambino so much which actually worked quite well) to place between me and the window and when I had the heaters in the middle of the room I was getting cold down one side.
So this little Glen is now just sitting in the exact spot to put the heat where it is needed and is very tidy. The feet edges rest up against the skirting and place the heater out enough from the wall to leave a safe gap between it and the oil central heating radiater that already exists there - but which I don't use much as no need to put the whole central heating on for when I'm only using this room.
It's warm today so the room is untypically not freezing but I can feel from the gentle heat comming off this little heater that it will serve me well on colder days and I still have the 2kw fan for a booster.
I wanted a low power heater as I have solar panels and low watts means I can normally genarate enough to have this running for free even on duller days. More important with solar to have lower power things on constantly than something like a high power heater for a short time so that the solar energy is more efficiently used. Even if I didn't have solar I still think this would be the perfect little heater for this particular situation and if I didn't already have about 8 other various electric heaters around the house I think I would be buying a multiple more of these for sure. Two for the living room for a start.
Doesn't have an on/off switch as many point out but I use one of my remote controlled power sockets so no problem there.
Maybe it would benefit from a thermostat but I think in winter or colder days it will need to be on constantly even in a small room so that won't matter. I'm sure I will need the 2kw fan to preheat the room quickly on those occasions and maybe to give the occasional boost or I can bring back the Bambino in addion or one of the spare Chico's. I think I ought to have it all covered now with my heater reserves.
Extremely happy with it. Low power so I can cut my electric use as the solar panels will mostly power it for free and it's very neat and tidy and fits perfectly into the space where I need it and seems to be putting out a good little amount of heat for such a low powered heater. Seems actually to be more effective than the 500w Bambino that I also bought but I will use that in the bedroom and think it's thermostat will be useful there for frost protection overnight. Here I will use the 2kw fan for frost protection as obvioulsy this Glen heater has no provision for that but it can be added with a temperature plug socket monitor but I think they cost almost as much as the heater though available if needed or probably a basic timer socket on for an hour or several overnight on cold nights would suffice
Think that's it. Finding the right heater for the particular situation is definitely good. I have different combinations of different types of heater for differrent rooms and I think each room benefits from it's own particular set up and some trial and error is usually required. There are a lot of choices but if you are looking for something low power to give a little heat boost or to have on for a lengthy time and be tidy and cheap to run then this should surely be a consideration.
