GLEE has brightened our TV screens throughout the year with its release on DVD extending the irresistible joy of the show's over-the-top plots and well-conceived song and dance routines as performed by the show's young and likeable cast. A string of albums and downloads have also added much to the show's optimistic view of the world and without doubt there's great anticipation and hope the forthcoming Season 2 will equal its success.

In the meantime this seasonal collection is the ideal stocking filler with its mix of traditional carols (GOD REST YE MERRY GENTLEMEN), familiar Christmas songs (JINGLE BELLS) and contemporary numbers (LAST CHRISTMAS) performed by the talented cast with that indefinable ability to make every song a joyful experience and those harmonies and arrangements just add an extra edge to the experience. It would appear the forthcoming Christmas episode will feature many of these songs. I particularly enjoyed WE NEED A LITTLE CHRISTMAS (originally from Broadway's MAME) as well as the unusual YOU'RE A MEAN ONE, MR GRINCH which has K.D. Lang in duet with Matthew Morrison. I also have to rave over the oft-featured Lea Michele who adds so much vocal excitement to the proceedings but of course praise must extend to the entire cast in ensuring their efforts make this an outstanding seasonal addition. No wonder GLEE's appeal is encouraging kids to join their school choirs!

They've done Madonna... they've done Britney. This time the folks at Glee tackle numerous festive numbers just in time for the holiday season. It's a great collection of songs and one that will no doubt be enjoyed by even those unfamiliar with the show. For the most part the songs are very different to anything Glee has done before.

The solo lead numbers come in the form of Lea Michelle [Rachel] taking on 'O Holy Night' and 'Merry Christmas Baby' (typically more musical theatre influenced as you would expect from her character). Amber Riley [Mercedes] performs the traditional 'Angels We Have Heard On High' in a very pleasant upbeat gospel version and Matthew Morrison [Will] does a very slow and chilled out Michael Buble-esque 'O Christmas Tree'. I didn't care so much for the 'Mr Grinch' number but it's very different and perhaps will make more sense when the accompanying episode is screened.

Cory Monteith [Finn], Mark Salling [Puck] and Kevin McHale [Artie] feature on a toe-tapping, upbeat jazz reworking of 'Jingle Bells'. Newcomer and fan favorite Darren Criss [Blaine] duets with Chris Colfer [Kurt] on a jazz piano/string arrangement of 'Baby It's Cold Outside'. A great addition and will surely add further to his growing popularity.

The ensemble numbers include 'The Most Wonderful Day of the Year' and 'We Need A Little Christmas' which have a very 'classic holiday movie' feel; infact they could've come straight out of a Christmas musical from the 60s.

'Deck the Rooftop' samples the traditional 'Deck the Halls' and is one of the more poppy, catchy, contemporary numbers. The collection is rounded off with the Glee girls taking on a beautifully stripped down R&B take on the traditional 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman'.

This has to be the happiest and most enjoyable Christmas cd that I've heard in ages. The cd is a delightful mix of traditional and modern Christmas hits redone in that catchy Glee-style people around the world have come to love. I won't go into deep detail about each track as previous reviewers have already done that very accurately, but some of my favourite tracks on here are "Jingle Bells" sung by Finn, Puck and Artie, Rachel's "Merry Christmas, Baby" (a stunning version of Karen Carpenter's classic song)and Mr. Schu's "Oh Christmas Tree." Another track,"The Most Wonderful Day of the Year" is also a standout track. However, don't get it confused with "The Most Wonderful TIME of the Year" as these are two entirely different songs. The latter was a 1963 Andy Williams hit whereas the song on the Glee album is from the 1964 American CBS tv special "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" - a classic Christmas program that is watched in the US every year at Christmas. I grew up with this song and after living in the UK for a good number of years, hearing it again has been such a special treat!

Whether you are a Glee fanatic or don't really follow the show, this album is bound to get your toes tapping and your home filled with lots of holiday cheer.

I've been waiting years for a Christmas album like this, and it's FINALLY dropped! A 'Musical' style Christmas is how I would describe it, rather than your traditional 'Pop' or 'Easy Listening' genre Christmas albums. You can imagine most of these songs being sung at the theatre. Personal favourites on the album in no particular order are:-

'Up On The Rooftop' - An up-tempo R&B Style song that you'll want to put on full blast, sung to the backing-track of Beyonce's Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It). The song has a great beat and I love the way they sing it. Deserves to be Christmas No 1, instead of some non-Christmas song put out by an X Factor contestant.
'We Need A Little Christmas' - One to listen to if you're feeling a little down. Will give you an instant lift - Broadway style!!
'The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year' - Another Broadway style classic - Jazz shoes at the ready!
'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen' - A traditional Christmas song sung by characters Mercedes, Rachel, Santana and Tina.
'Jingle Bells' - Lovin the boys big band style vocals on this upbeat number (Sung by characters Finn, Puck and Artie).
'O Christmas Tree' - Sung by Mr Schu with the chorus in the background.
'Last Christmas' - Well we all know this one girls don't we...!
'You're A Mean One Mr Grinch' - At first I thought this was Mr Schu and Sue Sylvester, but it turns out it is actually sung by K.D Lang who is rumoured to be in an upcoming episode.
'Oh Holy Night' - Sung by Lea Michelle's Character Rachel. A pretty standard version (I've heard better), but still nice to listen to.

The songs that don't cut it for me are 'Merry Christmas Darling', 'Baby It's Cold Outside' and 'Angels We Have Heard On High', hence the 4*'s. I've heard much better versions of these.

All in all, a different kind of Christmas album that is definitely worth listening to if you enjoy your musicals!
