Œuvres de Glazounov, Borodine & Arenski / The Nash Ensemble

Review

The Nash Ensemble s superior string players make a beautiful case for these not overfamiliar 19th-century Russian works: the unfinished D minor String Sextet by Borodin, Glazunov s splendid String Quintet in A, and Anton Arensky s String Quartet No 2 in A minor, a memorial for Tchaikovsky. This work oddly calls for two cellos, thereby gaining an aptly sombre hue if also an atavistic consort feel. The central variations on a theme of Tchaikovsky are better known in Arensky s full-strings version. The Borodin is only two movements, an allegro and brief andante, but richly enjoyable. The first of the four Glazunov movements is haunted by a lyrical viola theme. --Paul Driver, Sunday Times, 15 April 2012

Strad Recommends brilliantly played and superbly recorded. --The Strad Magazine

the star-studded Nash Ensemble is quite superb in an immaculate recording. --Yorkshire Post
