Utterly intriguing (NO SPOILERS)

The whole point of this adventure novel is the slow revelation and constant puzzlement it provokes. I would urge you to keep away from reviews which say anything at all about the story and not even look at the back cover. It was wonderful fun to launch straight in with no idea of what it is about.

I am puzzled at the low rating. I found it utterly intriguing. The characters are delightful and the events are at such a pitch I couldn't believe they could be sustained - but sustained they were, right to the end of its 784 pages. The technique is unique, simple and so effective I wondered why nobody though of it before. I won't explain except to say that you are kept constantly on your toes and have to pay attention to every detail. Even then you will probably want to refer back often and for this reason I would strongly recommend getting a hard copy rather than kindle or audio.

It is a long time since I so enjoyed a novel and when I realised, three quarters of the way through, that it had two sequels I was delighted and immediately ordered them both.

This is a thrilling adventure with a steampunk flavour and three of the most compelling characters I've encountered in a long while. The structure is interesting as well, with each chapter telling the story from the point of view of each of the protagonists in turn. This is one of those books that I wanted to be reading all the time and resented anything that prevented me from getting on with it (work, friends, family, sleep). As a consequence I was utterly thrilled to find out it's the first of a trilogy.

JUST BRILLIANT! I am hard-pressed to remember reading such a rollicking, exciting, involving, thrilling series of novels.

They are definitely not for everyone, very very complicated, violent, sexy and written in a very high style, but for me that was most of the appeal. I don't read thrillers often because even the most exciting and gripping ones are pretty badly written IMHO. But if you're a fan of -pretentious?- serious literature then these are for you. I really can't overstate my admiration for the quality of G. W. Dahlquist's writing, and would read anything else by him in a heartbeat.

First off let me say I got this as a freebie on my kindle and on the strength of it bought the book as it is a cracking story and very well written, but a chapter at a time would be a very expensive way of buying the book. Do yourself a favour, if its still free by all means download this chapter to see if you like it then don't bother with this chapter at time format just pick up one of the 1p second hand copies!

I loved this book, yes it is a book that doesn't immediately throw you into the thick of things.... but you feel that much more involved because of the steady build up when the action does really kick in. I went straight out to but Dark Volume on the day it was released... and I've been waiting eagerly for the newest book which I have just purchased. I've reread 3 times and passed on to a number of friends also... to be honest I'm not ready to start the new book yet because it brings me that much closer toi the end of the story!

This is one of my favorite books. However, it is an extremely long book and if you don't have blocks of time dedicated to reading, it will take a while to get through it. If you are someone who dislikes authors whose writing style involves very detailed descriptions, then you will probably not care for this author at all. This book, for me, was fascinating. I would classify it as Steampunk Science Fiction. The characters' points of view, from each character's chapters, are superbly written and detailed. I purchased the second book, but haven't set aside time to read it--at some point, I will read the first one over--it is so wonderfully written with a storyline that is very unusual, explored by equally unique and delightful characters.

Set in the late Victorian era, the story moves along at a breakneck pace and is told through the adventures of three individuals who meet and form a deductive powerhouse in what may be one of the best steampunk styled novels I’ve read.
If you like snapping dialogue, well written characters equally adept at rough physical action/violent activities and moments of deduction a la A. C. Doyle, then The Glass book of the Dream eaters is a a mind-sucking treasure.
Pluses:
* excellent character development
* enough villainy and bad behaviors to fill two more volumes
* enough plot twists to keep the reader guessing until the very end.
I purchased the next book in the series before I finished the first book.

It started out so well, the alternative history setting was absorbing, realistic, and drew me in… but then it all fell apart. It seemed to me like a Steampunk video game, written into novel format.
It made me wish for keyboard shortcuts, especially for Miss Temple (eg. alt-s = stab; alt-q = squeek; alt-m= moan; alt-x = do something unbelievably stupid like run off to the Royale, leaving her accomplices etc etc)
Sheer bloody mindedness made me finish it, skipping chunks of text till it was dead and I was free. Seriously, if you want a good Cyberpunk alt-history novel read "The Difference Engine" by Gibson & Sterling. Dont waste precious life on this book.

This was actually the second time I have read this novel, and now I plan to re-read the second in the series, "The Dark Volume." I have seen many others trying to assign this book to a specific literary genre, but in my opinion it began an entirely new genre all its own: Victorian Mystery Action Science Fiction.

Anyways... a great read. Very entertaining. A great way to escape into a well-written, intriguing, interesting tale for awhile. Which is the whole goal of reading fictional literature, isn't it?

If this book doesn't deserve five stars, then I don't know what would.

Daring fights, wonderful characters, and a scandal in the Victorian time period, what else could you ask for?

From the first chapter this book had me absolutely hooked. I read it on my kindle, so I never knew how long it was, nor did it matter, the fast paced story of daring fights and scandalous villains keeps this book a page turner from the first to the last. All three of the main characters are painted in exquisite detail, with witty dialogue and feelings that are explained in such a relate-able way you can't help but smile, having known the sensation yourself.
One of the largest criticisms of the book is its complexity with a large cast of characters. There is some confusion as to all of the members of the cabal early on, but by the fourth chapter you have them all sorted out.
My only criticism of this book was the ending. Half of me wanted it to go longer, the other half felt like the ending was a little anticlimactic, if only because the rest of the adventure had been so dangerous and exciting.
One of my very favorite books now, I eagerly await any other novels, should the writer try his hand at them again.

I read this book on my Kindle, which I'm still getting used to, but I don't think that swayed my opinion much. I'm a fan of big, involved storylines, and I'm never afraid of a thick book, but I did feel like this novel contained a few too many captures and escapes and long chase scenes.

What I really enjoyed was the portrayal of Miss Temple as a sassy, kicky young woman who, in a very uptight time, manages to establish her own very distinctive personality and kicks some butt. She was believable and feisty. Cardinal Chang and Dr. Svenson also are well developed, and I found myself liking the trio a great deal. On the flip side, the enemies seemed more two-dimensional and a bit ordinary - Rosamund just kept sounding like Cruella DeVille.

On the whole - just a generally "okay" read...

Don't stop reading after the first chapter!

I purchased this book based on teaser info from an ad about the book which I read elsewhere. I couldn't wait for the book to arrive, and when it did I dived into the books pages immediately. The first chapter was a curious puzzle to me. I could already tell that I liked Miss Temple, but the extra long sentences made me want to close the book and stop right there. I had already PAID for the book, though, so I decided to keep going until at least the end of chapter two.

By the time chapter two had ended, the sentence structure had improved tremendously, and I was already falling under the spell of both Miss Temple and Cardinal Chang. By the end of the third chapter, I was hooked and couldn't read the book fast enough to suit my need to know what happened next.

I finally finished reading the book last night. I LOVED the ending, although I confess that I may need to reread the book again to keep straight all of the subplots which were being revealed by the time the book reaches its conclusion.

The book isn't meant to be realistic, but the characters are wonderful because they do sometimes have human flaws which show up at the worst times. I also love the main trio because they are people who might have been overlooked by both others and themselves, but when put to the test, the main trio rises to meet the test.

This book reminded me of books which I read when I was much younger, books which would take me on an adventure. I loved the adventure and the characters. Bravo!

Each member of the hero triumverate is so able to think wildly on his/her feet and to care deeply and without shame about what he/she cares about that you really SEE the difference between those who never have to struggle for the things they want because they already have them, those who are willing to simply experience everything through the blue glow of their television screen, hoping only for a more throughly sensual experience somewhere down the technological road, and those who, in struggling, come to such a different point in their lives and such an internal revolution, that the other two options of passive experience are left utterly meaningless. Everything about the book says Don't Give Up. It's immensely creative--though, if I could have changed anything, it would have been the amount of blood at the end.
