An important story that needs to be told.
It highlights the abuse and deprivation that lurks behind the fixed smiles and leotards.
To some extent this offsets the thin storyline and weak plot.
I am still undecided whether the ending was very clever or just lazy.
A quick, tight, painful, excellent book.
As a former (very amateur) gymnast, it was such a visceral read. Thankfully, I never experienced what the gymnasts in the story do, but fear of the beam, pressure of competition, ripping callouses... It all came back.
And after watching the Netflix documentary Athlete A, it's all SO painfully real.

And after watching the Netflix documentary Athlete A, it's all SO painfully real.
Martina is one of five young Italian gymnasts who travel to Romania with their coach and physiotherapist to take part in an international tournament, where their rivalry and obsession are tested to the limit.
I have always been in awe of what their bodies can do but never thought about the danger and sacrifices these young people make to get to the top of their game, not to mention the horrific mental, physical and sexual abuse that we now know many have to endure behind closed doors.
This is an uncomfortable but compelling and revealing look into the world of elite gymnastics, although it is a work of fiction it is inspired by the author’s time spent behind the scenes and is brilliantly done
I read and reviewed an ARC courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher, all opinions are my own.
I liked that we read from Martina’s perspective which gives an insight in to the world of gymnastics and the measures people will take and the pressures that are put on them.
The book covers a range of subjects which make it a compelling read
