I like the base premise of this though of course it's a well used plot device for many films over the years, everything from 'I spit on your grave' to 'Thelma and Louise' to name but two. The characterisation of the two young women was good with the unhinged girl who gets a rush from killing and her willing but less psychotic associate whose bad experience at the hands of men provides the catalyst for their killing spree, although you get the impression that the sassy dominant one has probably indulged before given the casual nature of her actions.
The first half hour was a bit slow but it gets darker and more involving after that point. It was a bit 'different' to brush over some of the logistical elements of murder. Bodies and forensics were simply left and never referred to again; no police, no news reports and no ensuing investigations to get in the way. Mostly the acting was fine though some actors in some set pieces showed the limitations of their acting range. It's not a classic but it's a reasonable effort made with obvious budgetry constraints. Does contain some violence which I think was pretty tame by horror standards and a bit of a contrived ending. Not much in the way of extras bar a short 'making of' which didn't reveal much.

This is the story of a sweet young girl who get romantically involved with an older man. She then gets dumped when the man decides he wants to make a go of it with his wife.

Sweet young girl hen meets sassy killer and they feed off one another's problems which turns them into a couple of killing machines. A gripping tale that carries you along to the ultimate conclusion.

This is something special. The rotten tomatoes reviews are quite negative and misleading and so it is important to begin this review with some evaluative context to recalibrate expectations. Every so often, films are made in the land of HBO productions which reinscribe its supremacy in world cinema over France. Perhaps all the Americana that appears an hour into this film should be taken as a celebration of this film's success in that respect,.... because by an hour into this film, I was starting to think that this is easily one of the best films I have seen in the last few years. No high budget. No plot innovations. Just enormous talent that shines through throughout each scene. Sublime musical accompaniment and some really memorable scenes.

Normally films are expensively marketed and they end up disappointing. Here, it is exactly the opposite. The film has snuck onto the lovelfilm rental list as if it is some straight-to-video slasher horror offering, with some feminist pretensions as a USP. Think of it as arthouse instead.... and arthouse at its best. Final verdict: wow !!!!

Shae (Danielle Panabaker) is a student who studies male fantasies and how they view women as objects. She is hurt by an older male boyfriend who patches things up with his separated wife for the sake of his three year old daughter. Distraught, Shae is taken under the wing of a somewhat psychotic Lulu or Lu (Nicole LaLiberte) a woman straight out of a Billy Joel song..."She can carelessly cut you and laugh while you're bleeding."

On the rebound, she goes out with Lu and gets involved in a situation where "No" doesn't carry any meaning. With the aid of Lulu, they go on a killing spree, after which you wonder where this movie will go. Unlike so many films in this genre, it smartly brings it home.

The film brought to mind "Shame" and "Compliance" two recent films sold as being "disturbing and thought provoking" which are nothing more than perv films. This one is the opposite. It is sold as a perv film, but is really more thought provoking as it looks into psyche of sexes and the way they view each other and what women would do if they could get away with it.

This film ignores plot continuity points such as body disposal, clean up, or the police investigating the homicides. This is a theme driven film, not plot driven.

This is a soft 5 star rating. Most people won't like it. I enjoyed the small clever aspects of this film. The slow motion scene of the smoke leaving the gun, or the young girl riding by with vampire teeth as a way to say, "what roles are we subconsciously teaching our children." The policeman with the straw irritatingly sipping from a cup. Lu speaking at the Tarantino restaurant "explaining" the film theme. At the end there is a small insert of Lulu smoking a cigarette that brought the film home. Bravo Austin Chick for making a feminist slasher film into a subliminal art work. I appreciate what you did.

Parental Guide: F-bomb, off screen rape, sexual scenes, nudity (Nicole LaLiberte)

This is yet again another underrated movie that comes straight out on DVD in the UK, a horror, thriller, drama all in one movie about a couple of girls who have very bad experiences with men, Shae (Danielle Panabaker) and her psychotic influential friend Lulu (Nicole LaLiberte) decide they need to get even on the men that have caused them problems, but Shae starts to get drawn into something that's way over her head, but can she escape the clutches of the growing obsessive Lulu! The movie is really well character driven, Danielle and Nicole are both great actresses and beautiful in their own ways, the movie is well paced out with plenty of violence, not always graphic in your face but bloody in the right places, there's a great ending that makes you kind of wonder about the whole films perspective, its certainly different from your usual movies of this type and well directed with some nice camera shots, fantastic cast, worth picking up for a watch for sure!

My review is based on the German Blu-ray (Also available in a nice steelbook) (Capelight pictures)
Picture quality is great in HD, 1080p,
Features include a trailer, a good commentary with the director and main actress Danielle Panabaker and a making of (7-mins)
Features are in English, Film main language English plus German (Removable German subtitles)
Blu-ray Region B, 93-mins, 2012.
