Product description

Review

Even as Moyes tackles the inflammatory issues around art stolen during wartime, she never loses sight of the driving engine of her narrative . . . this pleasurably assured writer skilfully balances the quotidian and the comic with the broad and universal, leaving us with the tantalising possibility of a potential caper to come (Independent on Sunday)

Jojo Moyes paints a genuinely moving, beautiful picture of how love and belief will ultimately win the war, even if they can't win the battle. The Girl You Left Behind is a true work of art (Fabulous)

This story is wonderfully well-written and completely engrossing, with exquisitely drawn characters in a brilliantly plotted narrative. It will make you think long after you finish the final page (Daily Mail)

Moyes is the queen of the classy weepy and this won't disappoint. A masterclass in story-telling that fans of Me Before You will adore (Elle)

Another heart-stoppingly brilliant novel from Jojo Moyes (Marie Claire)

So contemporary romance is not supposed to be a guy's thing, but as a break from cops vs bad guys thrillers I would recommend this great book set concurrently in 1917 occupied northern France and present day London. It's not run-of-the mill chick lit; the book revolves around the courtroom battle for ownership of a painting whose provenance between 1917 and the time it was acquired at the end of WW2 is unknown. As both parties dig into the painting's past, the heroine tries to maintain her life and her late husband's legacy, and the adversaries fall for each other across the court room. A great book, thoroughly enjoyed cover-to-cover, with of course a happy outcome.

I read "Honeymoon in Paris", Jojo's `Novela' which supposedly leads up to the events in this book, prior to reading "The Girl you Left Behind" and am seriously wishing I hadn't because it spoilt this book for me. The inconsistencies between the two books are massive and incredibly annoying. I'm not talking minor differences, but complete changes to the storylines. In Honeymoon in Paris, the story commences with Liv and David's honeymoon ... in Paris (hence the title of the book!) She's considerably annoyed with him because he seems to be spending more of their honeymoon conducting business with important clients than he is with her. One day, left to her own devices once again, she stumbles across a painting in an art gallery titled "Wife, out of sorts" and realises that the girl in the painting totally reflects her own feelings to her husband at the moment. David buys the painting for her to make amends for his absences. The story then moves to Paris before WW1 and tells the story of Sophie (the girl in the painting) and her artist husband Edouard. They are desperately in love, but she is also annoyed and frustrated by his behaviour, and he captured her feeling this way perfectly in his painting "Wife, out of sorts".

So now we move on to "The Girl you left behind", which starts in Paris during WW1. Edouard has been called up to fight the war and Sophie is running the family Inn with her sister, Helene, outside Paris. On the wall of hotel is Eduoard's painting "The Girl you left behind" depicting Sophie looking happy and seductive. So, this is the first major inconsistency. The first section of the book is absolutely fantastic, and describes in vivid detail the hardships of people in France during WW1 and the occupation of both the village and the Inn by the Germans.

I loved every page turning chapter of this book. I couldn't put it down and wish I hadn't finished it. I wasn't sure about the sudden change of time and place the first time it happened but don't worry, it gets back to Sophie's story just when you are hooked into what will happen with Liv.

So engaging. Brings to life the real hardships of the French people during World War 1. Whilst telling a touching love story in that time, the author links this to a modern story of love that is linked by a painting of an enigmatic young woman.

I loved this book from beginning to end, when I started it I just wanted to know more about the characters and then when I got to book two I was sad that there was a change in characters but quickly got hooked on the story line and read it so fast. Love JoJo Moyes books and can't wait to read my next one

Book donors are great! It turned out they have sent me a book which didn't correspond to their quality standard for very good books. Anyways, they had also laid a refund sheet in the book explaining why the book is in this quality and that they would really much like to give refund/alternative tittle free replacement. I give them 5 stars for the great service, and despite the bad quality book, I will still read it :-) Thank you!

Very enjoyable read and kept me wanting to turn the page until the end. Hard to imagine the oppression of war but felt she conveyed it well.

This is the first book I have read by Jojo Moyes. It had me hooked all the way through. Made my laugh and cry and kept me guessing the outcome right up until the very end. Have ordered another two books by the same author and hope they are as good as this one.
