Review

‘Marnie Riches arrives with a fully formed narrative skill that suggests decades of experience; she’s created a wonderfully idiosyncratic heroine, prone to bad judgement, and placed her in an artfully constructed novel that even incorporates cogent discussions of sexuality and gender. Ms Riches is clearly a name to watch!’ BARRY FORSHAW, author of Euro Noir and The Rough Guide to Crime Fiction

'Fast, furious, fantastic…One killer thriller!’ Mark Edwards

‘Raw, brutal and utterly compelling. Riches is an explosive new talent.’ David Mark

‘I got totally engrossed and could not put it down’ Amazon 5* review

‘An outstanding debut’ Amazon 5* review

About the Author

Marnie Riches grew up on a rough estate in Manchester, aptly within sight of the dreaming spires of Strangeways prison. Able to speak five different languages, she gained a Masters degree in Modern & Medieval Dutch and German from Cambridge University. She has been a punk, a trainee rock star, a pretend artist, a property developer and professional fundraiser. In her spare time, she likes to run, mainly to offset the wine and fine food she consumes with great enthusiasm.

This second in the trilogy was a really good read. If you haven't read the girl who wouldn't die you do need to read it first as this story is a continuation in some ways and mentions events in the previous book. Since the first book, time has moved on and George and Ad have an established. but long distant relationship. Van Bergen is fighting his own demons and there is a serial killer on the loose killing across national boundaries. This was really well told, and the characters were true to themselves and their origins whilst developing in different ways. The story was gripping and although there wasn't a WOW moment as whole there is little to fault here and I genuinely couldn't put it down as I neared the end. I love the two lead characters in this but this series has so much more than a central crime and a couple of good characters. The more peripheral characters are mostly excellent, even in their flaws and irritating ways. There are a couple of exceptions to this for me, as I felt some of the police mentioned are a bit one dimensional, however this doesn't detract from the story one jot. My one quibble is the tantalising not quite cliff-hanger at the end which sets things up for the start of book three. I will be buying it even though I hate a book (or TV series for that matter) that doesn't quite finish properly. 9/10 from me.

I enjoyed the first Girl Who ... book (The Girl Who Wouldn't Die) but the Memsahib didn't, I didn't see the twist that draws the stories together coming but she did which I guess makes her cleverer than me. So I looked forward to reading this book, having already downloaded the next in the series (The Girl Who Walked In The Shadows) and pre-ordered the fourth (The Girl Who Had No Fear). But I was to be disappointed , George McKenzie remains one of my favourite characters, a true successor to Stieg Larsson's Girl (with the dragon tattoo), but this book was a bit of run of the mill, its just another story of cops (and criminal psychologists) vs very very bad baddies and it's not as good as the first book. That said I was late again in seeing the twist that draws the parallel stories together so maybe that says more about the book than I have.

This is a dark story which has you gripped right away. There has been a murder and George who's studying for a PhD in criminology is called in to help. As the story continues there are more murders which are really gruesome with organs missing. I found it really hard to stop reading this once it had started as it was fast paced. Lots of praise.

Further development of the characters from book 1 with plenty of twists and turns throughout. Well written, fast paced, gritty and exciting. Really enjoyed it.

She takes carp from no one. Very feisty girl, he sounds like an old doddering cop who is nearly ready to retire. To start with, this book was confusing but as it get deeper in, it becomes clearer. Thoroughly enjoyed it, pre ordered the next one which I hope will be as good as this on. Five stars, well earned.
