I got this kit to replace another tripod which had failed (Sony VCT R640) during use. My primary use for this tripod is to hold a spotting scope during target archery competitions. A spotting scope is generally heavier than an average digital camera body, and much longer (more overhanging bits) than most amateur camera setups. My previous tripod failed where the main stem connects to the main leg hinge flange.
I honestly can't fault this tripod. For fit, finish, rigidity, versatility and ease of use, I've found nothing that comes close until you move up to higher priced Manfrotto units.
I especially liked the independently adjustable leg angle (select from one of 3 positions) which allowed me to put one leg at a shallow angle for greater stability whilst keeping the others steep to allow more space on the shooting line. The tripod itself has 2 bubble levels, one in the leg hinge flange, and one at the top of the main stem. The height of the main stem is controlled via a friction collet (rather than a rack and pinion type windup) which has worked out great so far. Finally, a key feature is the hook at the bottom of the main stem which allows the tripod to be staked down in case of windy conditions.
The head unit, in comparison to the tripod, appears somewhat lacking in quality. However, I should point out that it is still significantly better than some other entry level units. It appears to be manufactured from cast zinc, with a 3 axis bubble level gadget screwed into the baseplate retainer. The hinge lines are cantilevered / singly supported, which probably contributes to the lack of perceived stability during use in moderately windy conditions. The quality of fit between the baseplate and baseplate receiver could be improved, but is adequate. The baseplate itself also appears to be cast zinc or possibly magnesium.
Overall, a great unit for the money, and a significant improvement over my previous tripod. It's a slight shame that the head unit isn't a little bit sturdier, but it hasn't let me down yet.
I have a Gorillapod which I use when I go out and about, walking, cycling etc, but it is a pain to use for landscape/night shots unless you have a high ledge to rest it on.
The Giottos MTL9251B solves that problem and some! The easy to extend legs allow me to have the camera at eye level when composing and the twin-handled head kit is a joy to use, allowing easy, free range of movement and a solid locking mechanism when needed.
The build quality is exceptional, my biggest surprise was the weight of the thing, I don't recommend this for carrying around too much!! But that weight is what gives the Giottos it's high build quality, and keeps it stable even in blustery conditions.
A great buy, especially if you can get it on offer, but don't expect a small or particularly portable tripod, this is truely a high-end, high quality but weighty piece of kit.
I confess I was confused by the apparently extended handle on the head which didn't didn't seem to do much- then someone pointed out this was actually the other handle for the head - unscrew it and insert into the empty hole so now you can tilt AND pan!
Wow! Is it a piece of engineering! If this is supposed to be an amateur one then heaven only knows how good the professional model must be.
It's extremely quick to set up and take down, and it looks like it'll last forever. Well, it'll certainly last me forever anyway. I wish I'd bought this the first time rather than wasting time and money on the Hama Star 63 that was broken when it arrived and looked like it would blow away in a strong breeze anyway.
On the plus side, the bag that the Star 63 came in fits the Giottos one perfectly, so at least I managed to salvage something from that purchase!
