I was after a resource that gave me brushstroke detail of the paintings and this book provided exactly that. The organisation was helpful and the accompanying essay full of insights. A great book if you want to know more - in detail - about Giotto.

4.0 out of 5 stars Description is partly misleading 21 Sept. 2012
By S. Fischer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
First of all: This is a gorgeous book with a lot of beautiful reproductions of Giotto's works. But after believing the publishers claim that most reproductions are in colour, I was disappointed by how many of them were actually in black in white; and this even includes many paintings covering a full page. In many cases, this seems completely unnecessary since other depictions of the same painting are in colour. So a complete view of a fresco might be in colour, while several detail photos are in black and white. If you go the publisher's page you then discover the more detailled and accurate account: '350 illustrations, 200 in full color'. 150 black and white illustrations doesn't add up to the claim 'most in full color'. So while this book is gorgeous, the description is misleading and I would have enjoyed it more if most or all of the illustrations had actually been in colour. What's also a bit peculiar is that the publisher didn't choose large paintings for the foldouts, but used several disconnected parts of paintings for those. The whole point of a foldout page to me is to get a large view of one large painting. I'm not quite sure why they did it like this. But again: The book is great, it could just have been a better if the issue of illustrations had been handled better. Giotto created truly beautiful works of art, so I appreciate there being a book about him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost as beautiful as a Giotto fresco 10 April 2012
By Reich Claude - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
This book is a very high-quality addition to the literature on Giotto. The text follows both a chronological pattern and a thematic selection (with such themes as color or architecture in the master's works). In-depths studies of the famous cycles in Assisi (the St Francis Basilica, lower and upper), in Padua (the incomparable Scrovegni Chapel) or Florence (the Bardi Chapel in Santa Croce) are accompanied by thorough analyses of individual works and historical facts about Giotto's relationship with his patrons and his pupils. The illustrations are absolutely fantastic, with a profusion of magnified details and a rendereing of colors which is seldom found in artbooks.

Highly recommended as much more than a beautiful coffe-table book.
