Product Description

Product Description

Hilarious violence is guaranteed. Your sanity is not. Odd Jobs Gin has taken on a lot of odd work in the past, and when you're a Jack of All Trades agency based in a feudal Japan that's been conquered and colonized by aliens, the term "Odd Jobs" means REALLY ODD jobs. But when some more than slightly suspicious secrets from the shadows of Gintoki Sakata's somewhat shady former samurai past and a new pair of odd jobs collide, the action is bound to get so wild and demented that only a feature film will do it justice! Sit down, strap yourself in, and make sure you're not wearing anything too tight or constricting as the junior half of OJG takes on the task of tracking down a tenacious terrorist while their silver-haired slickster of a partner seeks out a certain sword in the stunningly side-splitting and screwy Gin Tama!

Format: DVD
For those not acquainted with Gintama, the premise is a mid-to-late 19th century alternate universe where aliens were the ones to force Japan to open up to the outside world. The samurai are permanently laid off since the new world has no place for them, and swords are banned. Some samurai continue to rebel, some assimilate into to the new world, and some (like title character Gintoki) keep true to their samurai heart while scraping by day-to-day.

Former samurai Gintoki takes whatever 'odd jobs' will help him pay his rent. And if the job pays enough, perhaps there might be 300 yen or so left for his teenage apprentices: superwoman/alien Kagura and the ever-plain Shinpachi.

The anime series is usually comedic, jumping into action or drama occasionally, but this movie has more of an emphasis on action and drama.

The Gintama movie is a retelling of an arc from the anime series, focusing on a recent spate of attacks and disappearances. The troubling events seem to be related to a mysterious sword named Benizakura. Gintoki is hired to investigate. The stakes are even higher when his former comrade (and wanted rebel) Katsura disappears as well.

The movie has options to watch subbed or dubbed. The English dub might be confusing for newcomers since the pronunciation of some names is inconsistent. Long-term fans might not find the dub up to the level of the Japanese version, but it's good enough.

If they release the series on DVD in the UK...they can have more of my money.

The Benizakura arc, from which this DVD was cast, is not the best story arc in Gintama (IMHO), but it is probably the best suited to having a single movie made of it. There's nothing new to be seen, it is as they say in the opening scene a "rehash"; all the Benizakura episodes in one long video. But don't be fooled! This is an excellent story filled with all the random that a Gintama fan could wish for.

I wont say any more, just this:
If you know and love Gintama already, buy it! If not, go and watch the series online FIRST, then buy this DVD.

Before watching this, I'd only seen snippets of the subbed anime. It did seem pretty funny, but I'd never really given it a go. After watching this though, my opinion's gone from "funny" to "downright hilarious". This film is dubbed in English, so I was thinking maybe some of the jokes would be lost in translation, but that's not the case at all. The action scenes are amazing too. Definitely glad I bought this.

This movie is basically the Benizakura arc from Gintama with very little editing. If you haven't watched Gintama I recommend watching this movie first since this sums up how cool most of the arcs will be.
