The Gilded Chain is book #3 in the Surrender Series by Lauren Smith, I was lucky enough to be gifted an ARC of this book to read for Gemma Reads Too Much.

As a reader and blogger I LOVE a good series, for me as long as they are good then the more books the merrier.

The Gilded Cuff was a great read, The Gilded Cage was a fantastic read so as you can imagine I had pretty high expectations of The Gilded Chain.

This book promised a super dominant Wes Thorne, and for the first few chapters that’s what we got. I loved his intensity, I loved his dirty inner thoughts and I loved the fact that I was really looking forward to what I imagined would be a BDSM journey of discovery for our innocent Callie.

BUT all of my hope and dreams for this book fizzled away once Wes and Callie get together.

Where was the smutty sex???

Where was the Dom/sub play???

Where was the intensity???

I hate to say it but this book just totally missed the mark for me.

Wes went from super Dom alpha to metrosexual in 2.3 seconds and I honestly have never been so disappointed.

I get that this book didn’t want to become another Dom/sub rip off but in that case don’t mention it at all. Instead this book has a call me sir scene and then it’s never mentioned again. It has two tie me up scenes but other than that the sex is pretty much standard vanilla. I mean they go to a sex club and Callie refuses to only wear underwear as she doesn’t want to be seen!!!!

Callie is so flipping innocent it’s ridiculous, I don’t think she touches Wes below the belt at any point in this book; she never gives him a blowjob and at one point even asks “do I rub it?

4.5 - "Be brave for me." Stars!

Lauren Smith has such a great talent when it comes to character development, and one of the main things that I have loved about this series so far is the fact that every yummy man that we have come into contact with has been completely different from his predecessor. I loved Emery and Fenn, but Wes… I had a funny feeling he was going to be something a little bit special, and boy did he get this readers heart a-pounding.

We have seen bits and piece of Wes in the previous two books, being best of friends with the Lockwood brothers he has played a pivotal part in that family’s reconnection. But the actual man and what makes him tick, well the author managed to keep that a little more elusive.

”You think you can seduce me in thirty days.”

I loved that Lauren took this story out of the US, and Callie and Wes’ fledgling relationship gets its wings whilst taking in the sights and sounds of Paris. This couple are diverse in that they are opposites in a lot of ways. Wes is experienced in all aspects of giving and receiving pleasure, Callie has spent her life on a remote farm, pretty isolated from the rest of the world. Wes has a deep appreciation for art and its preservation, Callie is an artist, who just needs a little of the right kind of encouragement and support to achieve excellence.

"We're a disaster waiting to happen."

Both of them together… the innocent and the experienced, the naïve around the confident, really gave this story a depth and charm.

”This is all new to me. I don’t know how to be with you…”
Just Be… That’s all you have to do.

This is the second book I've read by this author, and I'm quickly becoming a fan. Lauren Smith is very good at including all the little details that come together to bring the characters, setting and story alive. You really get to know her characters and feel involved in their lives. Although this book is third in the series it can be read as a standalone, as the couple featured here are only secondary characters in the previous books.

The hero, Wes is so dreamy and a really interesting character. There were a lot of layers to his personality, he was a surprisingly complex guy. To start with I wasn't convinced that Callie was a good match for him, but they proved me wrong as they worked really well together. Their chemistry was hot and the sex scenes were well written.

I really liked that much of this book was set in Paris, it gave it a different feel to the previous books. The author really did this wonderful city justice, I felt like I'd been transported to Paris. The Gilded Chain is a great book with an intriguing storyline so it gets four out of five stars.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.

I really loved the first two books in this series and was so excited when this popped up on my Kindle. Lauren Smith has a wonderful writing style and you feel like you're there with the characters. I wasn't as compelled with this as I was the other two. I don't know why, I felt the story wasn't as strong as the first two, but then it was an incredibly hard act to follow. I also thought it ended a bit strangely and the Epilogue was another story all together. I'd love to know what happens going forward with Fenn and Hayden, Emery and Sophie. Will we hear about the engagement party? I do hope so.
