Intel® Core™ i7 Processor and X58 Chipset support

The GA-X58A-UD3R was designed specifically to take advantage of the raw power of the next generation Intel® Core™ i7 processors and the Intel® X58 Express chipset, whose new evolution in computing architecture is able to deliver an amazing performance break through from past processor generations. Replacing the Front Side Bus is the new Quick Path Interconnect, or QPI, whose 25.6 GB/sec transfer rates (double the bandwidth of the 1600MHz FSB) eliminates the communication bottleneck between the processor and chipset.

USB 3.0 Support
The GIGABYTE X58A series motherboards support the latest generation SuperSpeed USB 3.0 technology made possible through an onboard NEC uPD720200 host controller. With superfast transfer rates of up to 5 Gbps, users are able to experience an almost a 10x improvement over USB 2.0. The GA-X58A-UD3R is Gigabyte's cheapest route into the world of (socket 1366) i7 CPUs. Unless you are an enthusiast who needs/ craves/ demands the absolute top-of-the-line components in his/ her computer, this motherboard is also more than good enough.

I bought this after whittling my choice down to two options: this and ASUS 1366 P6X58D-E S/L Motherboard, and it's a choice that virtually anyone who wants to build an i7 machine will come to. For me, Gigabyte *just* about shades it, but there really is very little between them. Both offer a pair of USB3 ports, and both also offer a pair of SATA3 sockets. This means that both motherboards are future proof in these departments. USB3 will eventually become the new standard for USB sticks, and SATA3 will become the standard connection for solid state drives.

So where does Gigabyte's board beat Asus'?

1) The GA-X58A-UD3R has 10 SATA sockets (inc. 2 x SATA3), to Asus' 6 (also inc. 2 x SATA3). Now, ten might seem overkill. However, in building my new machine, I'll have plugged in to it: 1 x DVDRW drive, 1 x BD-ROM drive, 1 x SSD, 2 x HDD. That's five drives already. Six sockets doesn't leave me with much room for expansion. Ten does.

2) The GA-X58A-UD3R offers 4 full-length PCI-e sockets, whereas the P8X58D-E only has three. The four sockets can be configured (depending on the hardware you put in) to run at: x16/x16/x1/x1, x16/x8/x8/x1, x8/x8/x8/x8. What does this mean? The P6X58D-E has one less PCI-e x16 slot because it offers two legacy PCI slots to Gigabyte's one.

The one thing initially putting me off getting this motherboard was the review on here calling this a 'lemon'. However, the motherboard now sent out through Amazon is Revision.2, the latest version of the board and there are no issues with it, it wasn't until I checked the comments that I realised Gigabyte had released a 2nd revision of the board. I decided to go with it, having found no better boards around the same price, and I'm here to say I'm glad I did.

It boots quickly, faster than my previous motherboard and considering this was my first PC build (having previously got the PC ready-made for me) the instructions provided for wiring it up were brilliant, no problem getting it fitted and installed.

I bought this over the many other X58 motherboards (MBs) out there as I needed a lot of USB connections and this sure ticks that box. With 8 USB connections on the MB (2 external SATA ports double up as USB ports) and the 2 USB slots I have on the top of my case I now have plenty for all the things I have connected to the PC. An added bonus for those into overclocking is the addition of a 'Clear CMOS' button on the back of the system if you happen to alter anything in the BIOS and need a quick reset to the defaults. Haven't OC for a while, considering my old MB was appalling at doing so, but I may delve into it at some point now.

I had no problems booting up or installing the required drivers and have just started having a look at the various utilities that come with it, which allow for easy overclocking at the click of a button. As a platform for an i7 processor (1366 socket) this is a fantastic motherboard.

Hmm, I'm undecided on this one. I had problems right from the start!

Firstly it appears that I bent a couple of pins locating the processor which caused it to fail to see 1/2 my memory. Now, I've been making my own PCs for years and I'm into double figures. Never had that problem before. But is it the mobo or the chip design, who knows? I had to bend them back very very very carefully.

Next I'm particularly unhappy with the boot speed. It seems to sit for 20 seconds with a blank screen. No other mobo I've had does this. I was specifically looking for a quick reboot and that's too long for me.

Next, I was seduced by the variety and number of types of PCI slot, the main reason I purchased this board. This is an area it scores well in. But I found that the slot right next to the processor is not useable because it's blocked by the processor heatsink! I guess I used the wrong heatsink, oh well. But in any case, it'd be only useable with a small PCIe card too because it's also blocked by the mobo heatsink...

I like the HD connectors on the edge of the board, this is quite useful.

In general I'd like to make a plea to mobo manufacturers that they adopt some tips from Apple and stop scattering the various connectors across the 4 corners of the mobo. Perhaps some more standards in connectors and positions would help us reduce the wiring and the length of wiring?

Finally, I've had quite a few reboot blue-screens with this board. And quite a few Grub messages. I don't think I'm doing anything fancy apart from booting from a SDD, but I suspect that this mobo is not quite at home and not quite as reliable as my usual Asus mobos that I've purchased in the past.
