Review

"PROVOCATIVE . . . UNLOCKS THE KIND OF PASSION THAT GREAT INVENTIONS ARE MADE OF."
--New York Daily News
"Takes readers beyond the myths and stereotypes about talent and genius . . . Everyone interested in maximizing intelligence, creativity, or productivity will want to read this book."
--MAUREEN NEIHART, PSY.D.
Contributing editor, Gifted Child Quarterly"

From the Inside Flap

Are you relentlessly curious and creative, always willing to rock the boat in order to get things done . . . extremely energetic and focused, yet constantly switching gears . . . intensely sensitive, able to intuit subtly charged situations and decipher others' feeling? If these traits sound familiar, then you may be an Everyday Genius--an ordinary person of unusual vision who breaks the mold and isn't afraid to push progress forward. . . .
As thought-provoking as Daniel Goleman's Emotional Intelligence, psychologist Mary-Elaine Jacobsen's Gifted Adults draws on a wide range of groundbreaking research and her own clinical experience to show America's twenty million gifted adults how to identify and free their extraordinary potential. Gifted Adults presents the first practical tool for rating your Evolutionary Intelligence Quotient through an in-depth personality-type profile. Demystifying what it means to be a gifted adult, this book offers practical guidance for eliminating self-sabotage and underachievement, helping Everyday Geniuses and those who know, love, and work with them to understand and support the exceptional gifts inherent in these unique personality traits.

When I was at school I was identified as "gifted and talented". I'm a young adult now, trying to figure out a place in the world. I've been struggling with all kinds of doubt, feelings of underachievement (despite often overachieving). It's felt like nothing I do is ever good enough.

I'm SOOOO grateful for this book. It's has been really healing and eye-opening. Jacobsen's thesis is: as a gifted adult you're wired differently. That's why the world seems to strange and baffling. It's why all the career advice everyone gives doesn't seem to work for you. It's why you see things that others don't.

Because of that we build up all kinds of defense mechanisms. We either exaggerate or hide our traits and this makes it very difficult for us to interact with others, and for others to see our strengths.

The solution is to understand ourselves, how we can integrate and manage our 'gifts' so that everyone benefits. Most importantly it lets us find some inner peace.

If I had a criticism - sometimes the book repeats itself a bit. Sometimes it's a little bit verbose. However, this book is well worth it. I could have paid 100-200x as much to get these insights from a therapist.

A good read if your gifted or interested in the subject, lots of great points, but a bit too much psychoanalysis for me, but perhaps only because I'm a therapist and found lots of those bits obvious. Worth picking up.

Pros: Liked it very much. Like many others I've finally understood a few things about myself and I certainly hope I'll manage some things a bit better from now on. Time for a change!

Cons: I get tired of the psycho-analysis gibberish that is so common in American self-awareness books, it can be quite annoying for European readers. Also, I don't do God so I'm very uneasy when Dr Jacobsen writes for pages about our "divinely designed purpose" and says we are a vehicle given a gift for higher purpose, etc...
