Grudem proposes a radical discontinuity in the notion of prophecy between the Old and New Testaments, with the Old Testament being divine authority both in revelation and the words used to communicate it, but the NT version being divine revelation only - and not divine communication.

Yet this is simply not taught in Scripture. And such a massive change would need to be communicated very clearly. Grudem gets to it through a fairly blinkered use of proof-texts and partisan reading: really he gets there because he is determined so to do. But his NT version of prophecy is a distortion and dislocation of the OT gift, a rather pathetic and pointless half-version of it....

It is, in fact, the practice of false prophecy promoted as true (which of course it always is). This is truly dangerous stuff.

Not that you'd need my assurance of sound exegesis when J I Packer and John Wimber write positively on the back cover!! Overall, it is a fairly solid book, and does a good job of tackling some fairly common cessationist arguments. Possibly of most value is the showing that prophecy is more fallible than we think, and should be weighed accordingly.
Obviously, I don't find myself in agreement with every nuance and thought (the most glaring for me are Grudem's views on the apostolic office and his discussion of a "word of knowledge"/"word of wisdom"). However, overall it is a good book that I hope will open more in the body of Christ to this valuable gift of the Spirit.

Excellent and very thorough book on the gift of prophecy. It treats this subject in a very scholarly way which is very good. This book clarifies issues, and answers many questions which needed to be answered. I highly recommend this book to everyone who wants to obey the Word of God 1 Cor 14:1.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read 26 Jan. 2015
By dlajammer - Published on Amazon.com

This book is extremely helpful and a must read for every Christian. Above all I appreciate the thoroughness given. Terms are clearly defined, texts are correlated, and misnomers are laid to rest. Those of us who for many years have thrown the baby out with the bathwater can more clearly understand why the Apostle exhorted believers to seek this gift and not to despise prophecies, but test everything, and to hold fast what is good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book on the topic 27 Nov. 2012

This book did more to help me sort of the issues of this NT gift than any other book on the gifts I've read. Grudem is an extraordinary theological researcher, thinker and writer. This is a must read for anyone who truly wants to understand this gift and its importance to the church today. Buy this book and you'll get much of the best thinking of other recognized prophecy as NT gift commentators.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prophetic book from textual analysis of the bible 14 May 2010
By C. Lorence - Published on Amazon.com

I have been searching since 1998 for this kind of book. There are so many book about prophetic in the market but all of them usually based on personal experience and not from textual analysis of the bible. This book is different Wayne not try to persuade the reader using supernatural experience that he or his friend have but Wayne take us to look from the text of the bible first. Through careful examination of the bible's text but using down to earth languange, he explain what is prophet, what is prophecy, is it true that the bible suggest that all this gifts still exist until today and so on. So many time those from reformed theology underestimate this gifts because they think there isn't any textual analysis that support this assumption. Well this book will give those people something to chew about. For me personally this book clarify some assumption that has been made and strengthen my faith in gifts of Holy Spirit. So I really recommend this book for all christian out there that need firm foundation on prophetic ministry, especially prophecy and prophet ministry........ God Bless......

I selected this book because I trusted Wayne Grudem to give a solid Biblical perspective on this topic. I was not diasappointed. I wanted a better understanding of the gift of prophecy, and the proper use of it. This was an excellent resource. I am now more confident of sharing the "insights" God gives me, in a manner that follows Biblical guidelines.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best resource for a Biblical, balanced vies 1 Mar. 2008
By Mark S. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This book is a great resource for a balanced and biblical view of this subject. If you are not a cessationist yet do not appreciate the way the prophetic gift is approached and practiced with such excess and error in many contemporary expressions of Christianity, than this book will be of great value. I have been pastoring for 22 years and a seminary graduate (GCTS). I have found that when the gift of prophecy is allowed to find expression in a Biblical way in a church body it can be a great blessing. Grudem's book demonstrates fine scholarship in a very readable style, address all areas concerning this subject and is of great help in developing a biblical approach.
