About the Author
Dare Wright (1914-2001) was a fashion model and photographer based in New York City. In 1957, she used her childhood doll Edith and two teddy bears as the subjects of her first book The Lonely Doll. The combination of mesmerizing black and white photographs and simple, eloquent text made the book an immediate success and earned it a place on The New York Times Best Seller list along with Dare Wright’s next Lonely Doll book, Holiday For Edith And The Bears. A Gift From The Lonely Doll is the sixth book in the series featuring Edith, Little Bear and Mr. Bear. Originally published in 1966, it was photographed both within the confines of the author’s small apartment in New York City, and in and around the home of a friend in upstate New York. All of the photographs in this book have been reproduced from Dare Wright’s original negatives that she developed in the tiny darkroom of her New York City apartment. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

OK, so this paragraph might be pushing it, but it has merit. I like that the family units in this book are not traditional. No kid would question the bear/doll family units. They are toys, but I suppose if you were looking for a book that was inclusive of race, adoption, physical differences, and sexual relations, this book might be one to pick up. You could infer that the two male bear cousins were gay lovers under cover (2 old male bears living to together in the country) The book could also illustrate diversity. Everyone loves Edith. There is no mention that she is different, though she is clearly physically very different from the rest of the family (and adopted!). This world is a happy world full of very real love and devotion.
