Product description

Review

"Charming, quirky, magical. " --Joanne Harris

" Carol Lovekin's prose is full of beautifully strange poetry" --Rebecca Mascull, author of The Visitors and Song of the Sea Maid

" Drawing on nature, witchcraft, age-old fairytales and secrets, Lovekin weaves a powerful, spellbinding tale." --Judith Kinghorn, author of The Last Summer"one of the most exquisitely beautiful books that I've read in a really long time. This novel has an almost dream-like quality to it and the writing is so evocative; it's simply a book not to be missed!" --Hayley, Rather Too Fond of Books

"Beautifully written it pulled me in from the very first page... A magical and emotional read fully deserving of my five star award." --Jo Lambert

"Every so often, a book comes along that makes me feel as if the words I have at my disposal can't possibly be enough to put together a review that does it full justice... read it, experience it, and love every moment of it as much as I did." --Being Anne...

"A marvellous example of a novel that is mystical, examines human resilience and finally redemption. Absolutely beautiful, charming and a delight to read." --Ali the Dragon Slayer

"left me feeling full of hope and happiness, and feeling like I had just finished a very magical book." --Faye, A Daydreamer's Thoughts

"Ghostbird is an engaging, female-centred narrative... A debut well worth a few hours of your time." --Naomi Frisby, The Writes of Woman

I loved this and quite surprised myself as I thought it would be a standard romantic Welsh small village type novel but it is so much more! It had elements of the mystical realism I loved from the works of Isabelle Allende and Angela Carter and you never knew quite which way things were going to go. The characters are real in a " warts and all" kind of way but the plot wandered between a mystery and a ghost story with little hints to fantasy worlds lying just below the surface. A bit like Wales itself really! I like a book where you can empathise with more than one character and not feel you are betraying anyone by wanting things to work out well for everyone and I very much enjoyed keeping reading and getting to the end with no overly obvious plot spoiler en route. I thoroughly recommend this book and suggest you read it imagining yourself curled up in a Welsh cottage with mist swirling round the windows and a slight uneasiness as to whether you're in the 20th century or in a magical Avalon type world.

Was so disappointed with this book. It started slow, there were too many welsh words, and apart from Lili none of the characters were remotely likeable. The layout & editing are bad, it was hard to follow the story sometimes & I was quickly becoming bored of the repeated references to the smell of meadowsweet & the scar on violets hand. About halfway through I felt like I couldn't care less about what happens with the characters, and then suddenly they all started behaving completely out of character with no real link into the change. After this I skim read the last 30 minutes or so, just so that I could finish it & try to understand why the ratings were so high. I really couldn't wait for the book to end, just so that I could move onto something better

Awful boring story telling. Too much dialogue and far too much flitting about with no real purpose, also lots of typos on my kindle. I didn't even bother to finish it because it became rather tedious and far too drawn out.

I absolutely loved this book. I got lost in its wonderful settings and the characters. Unusually, I could associate with all of the Hopkins women, not just one central character and my sympathies were pulled in all directions. A book that lingered after the final page was closed.

One dimensional characters, poorly written. Could have been so much better. I couldn't wait for it to end.

The first thing that drew me to this book was the cover. It is absolutely gorgeous. It’s full of mystery and intrigue, and having now read the book, really feel it fits too. After seeing the cover, it was the synopsis that got me to read the book. Which I am glad I did. It was a very unique and interesting story full of emotions, mystery and intrigue. While I had a few issues with it, I did overall like the book and would happily recommend it to others. Essentially this book left me feeling full of hope and happiness, and feeling like I had just finished a very magical book.

One of the first problems I had with this book is that it took me a while to get into it. It has a bit of a slow start and feels very confusing to begin with. This is, in most part, to do with the writing style of the author so eventually this got a lot easier to read as I got used to the style. The plot was very fascinating to read about and I loved following the story of the characters’ lives. I loved how it twisted and turned and how it all ended too. It was a really magical and moving story about family, friendship and love.

The characters in the book are all really well-written with intricate backgrounds and unique personalities. I found Cadi to be a very interesting character and I really connected with her as she struggled to understand where she came from and who that made her. I also really liked Lili. She was a fascinating character, strong and resiliant too. Caught in the middle of things and just wanting the best for her neice. And then there’s Violet who has so much burden on her shoulders and struggles to just get by. She’s done what she thinks is best but also what she can cope with. She was a very interesting character to read about.

Ethereal and mysterious, this story drifts into the depths of family tragedy before soaring lightly towards a satisfying ending. The rain is a character in of itself and the language crafted with skill and a touch of the sublime.

I struggled with this book. I have seen many good reviews but at times felt i was reading something different. There was some bad editing in places from spelling mistakes to missed spaces between words. I stuck with it and read to the end and for me the ending was flat. I wish i had enjoyed it and feel bad leaving a mediocre review. Not for me
