Ghost Writer is a novella and I read it in one sitting. I loved the whole story line of a writer who is struggling to meet her dead line as she can't think of anything to write. Following her husbands advice of reverting back to writing with pen and paper seems to work. Only problem is that Natalie can't remember writing it.
This was such a fun packed read. For a short story this book packs a lot of punches and had me literally on the edge of my seat. If you haven't yet read the authors books then highly recommend trying this one as I am sure it will have you racing off to read the rest of her work.
Forget ghost stories where ethereal forms pass through walls and closed doors scaring the crap out of some poor chap or where creepy dolls come to life at night with blazing eyes. The 'ghost' in this book makes its presence known in a very creative, unusual way.
Natalie Cooper is a bestselling author who is currently suffering from writer's block. Whatever she does, nothing seems to spark her imagination back to life. Until one day after dozing off over her open notebook, she's amazed to find she has actually written something. It's the first chapter of a new book and a good one at that, but there's a problem... Natalie doesn't remember writing a word. Strange!
This happens more than once and little by little quite a disturbing story, whose main character is a journalist named Ryan, starts to take shape in her notebook. Natalie is gobsmacked and intrigued to see how the story will develop. But soon strange things start to happen to Natalie and her husband. It's as though someone is trying to scare them off. Somehow, unknowingly she has upset some dangerous individuals. But who? And why? Could this possibly have anything to do with the story she's writing? But why would anyone be irked by a fiction book? Who is really writing the book?
I don't wish to say any more as this is a short story and I don't want to spoil it to anyone. I'll just say that Natalie and her husband go to hell and back before THE END in both Natalie's and this book is reached.
Being a fast-paced, suspenseful novella, I read this book fairly quickly, and I thought it was brilliant. I wanted to know how it will all end. What would happen to Natalie and her husband and what message was the Ghost Writer trying to convey. Who was behind all the mishaps happening to them? And more importantly who was the Ghost Writer?
The author's writing is fluid and crisp making this an even more delightful read. All characters are true to life and the dialogue realistic. I loved the whole idea behind the book. The ending left me a bit sad maybe, but on the whole I really enjoyed reading this clever novella and I find no problem in recommending it. Well done!
I am starting to be converted by these shorter pieces of work and they fit perfectly if you have a spare hour or so to read in the garden or on a journey.
What a fabulous read it was too. Bestselling author Natalie develops writer's block, not what you need to suffer from when there is an important deadline looming. She tries everything to discover her writing mojo again but nothing works. Exhausted she falls asleep with her notebook and pen in her hand. When she wakes up she finds a complete chapter has been written, has someone played a joke on her while she slept or is there something far more sinister afoot?
You'll just have to read it and see. Best novella I've read by a long shot.
Perfect read for a long train journey or flight. I have enjoyed reading Netta Newbound's full length novels, but this short story certainly packs a mighty punch. A worthy five stars.
