Ghost Claws (The Ghosts)

This short story, which appears to be set shortly after the events of 'Ghost in the Forge', and is told by the circle-master known as Halfdan, appearing as one of his alter egos, Basil Callenius. It rolls along very smoothly, as murder is committed, and the villain found. The method is unusual, but has certainly been used before (see Dorothy Gilman's 'Mrs Pollifax and the Lion Killer' for one). As always, the atmosphere is well-drawn, and the mystery satisfying, but there's more... There's Halfdan's account of finding the young Caina, and the choices which lay before her at that stage; there's the several versions of how Halfdan joined the Ghosts, and why they don't necessarily ring true - and there's the other issue, of what Halfdan intends for Caina's lover, Corvalis Aberon.

For a short story, it given a great deal of information about the characters involved, their backgrounds, natures, and ways of reasoning. I suspect it's quite indispensable to the series, and is a very good read - especially for only 73p! Highly recommended.

Jonathan Moeller has become a favourite author of mine. The Ghost series of books has a fine, strong female lead and although all of the books can be read as free-standing separates, they do form a cohesive series, with well depicted characters and good story-lines.
