This is the umpteenth book on Gettysburg and the Civil War in general that I have on my shelves - almost all purchased from Amazon. Although it adds little to other accounts, it is eminently readable, once again conveying the horror of battle. My interest in the subject came from viewing the film 'Gettysburg' on TCM. Let me point anyone who has not had the pleasure to Amazon's DVD/Film lists where Ted Turner's two epic films can be found - at irrestible prices.

First hand account, dramatically told. My God! What bravery, but what foolishness to attack prepared positions in close-packed ranks. Why??? What insanity suggested advancing shoulder to shoulder into canister-firing artillery and massed rifle fire? Tactics repeated in an even larger scale in the Great War half a century later.

3.5 would be more accurate.
An intriguing first hand account of the epic battle of Gettysburg.
Definitely worth a read given the price.
Would I read it again? Probably not.

Although written in the prose of the age, Mid 19th century, it is stll readable. By that I do not mean it is written as a tragic novel. It is essentially a reference book that can used by many disciplines.
