A fantastic book covering all aspects of the Gettysburg campaign and the decisive battle. Packed full of illustrations, diagrams, photographs and artwork.
This book is a mine of information for Wargamers and is a great read as well.
It follows the author's earlier book on Waterloo which was equally comprehensive.
It is a very heavy book and in my opinion too bulky to carry around the battlefield, but that is not a criticism. I would not say it is intended as a battlefield visitors guide, but rather a book to read at home and immerse yourself in the detail.
Highly recommended.

I already own The Waterloo Companion which is an excellent and informative book. The book is far superior to that. The author has clearly invested a lot of time in research regarding the men who fought at the battle. It is a very large book full of information, well produced maps, anecdotes, regarding the campaign.In fact it is probably the only book you will require to get an understanding of the battle.

Previous reviews confirmed my intention to buy this book. Boringly, I agree completely with the high praise given.The setting,characters and weapons are well described in print and illustrations in a chatty easy manner.The battle itself,is described in the same manner and does not loose its way relating the numberless small-unit tactics that made up the three days of battle.
My main area of praise come with the wide-angle photos of the actual field .This aspect is seldom covered adequately but in this book, Devils Den,The Round Tops,McPhersons Ridge and The Angle become so much more than a picture in the imagination. Excellent!

An extremely fine companion book tohave available with which o consult as you read the many books about the Battle of Gettysburg and the about many combatents eg. Generals Robert E Lee, George Meade, James Longstreet, Winfield Hancock and all of the others. First class battle plans & movements clearly defined.
It is very well written with masses of information about the men, their equiment, the terrain and the lines of battle strategics & movements. Mark Adkin has produced a definative and useful reference book.
