Product Description

From the Back Cover

Everybody has stuff they can't get over!
Sometimes you can't just pick yourself up and move on.
But even then, there is hope.
When hard times strike, we long for the day when we will "get over it" and have closure. This is a difficult--often impossible--road to travel. There are some things in life that we must learn to live with because they will never truly go away for good. Despite that truth, there is life--rewarding and abundant life--after heartache and pain.
With deep compassion, John F. Westfall leads you beyond your pain and into a life of confidence, freedom, and secure joy. With humor and vulnerability, he shows you how to move forward beyond fear, regret, guilt, and bitterness into a life worth living.
You may carry the wounds of the past, but that doesn't need to keep you from living a hope-filled future.

John F. Westfall is founding pastor of Harbor Church, a creative new congregation in the Pacific Northwest, and has pastored churches in Washington, California, and Minnesota. A former radio show host, an ordained pastor, an adjunct professor at Fuller Theological Seminary, and a popular retreat and conference speaker, John lives in the Seattle area with his wife, Eileen, and their dog, Maggie, who appears to have a personality disorder.

Good advice. But so much is about his personal life that it would appear as a self-therapy journal.

Drawing on his own experience and adding some theology. A great book alongside other teaching for a church. Highly recommended

I needed this book 30 years ago. This is a must read for anyone dealing with anger/forgiveness issues. This is a must read for anyone dealing with someone who has anger/forgiveness issues. Christian and non-christian, the information and wisdom in this book will be helpful to all.

John writes an honest, deeply personal book using the real-world issues and events we all wish we didn't have to face.

He walks you through the kinds of grief and healing that need to take place in order to get past the hard times and find new life and new adventure.

This is a Christian book written for a Christian reader but folks not acquainted with or practicing Christianity will find the wisdom to be universal.

Too often the Christian lives in an insular community where, in addition to maintaining a pious impression and reputation, the pressure to "just get over it" or "be a good witness" is dominant. This is book an antidote to such societies of denial.

Can't go over it. Can't go under it. Can't go around it. Gotta go through it.

Might as well get started.

Meh.

I *wanted* to like it. The title sounded like just the thing I wanted to hear. Except I didn't hear anything new, or provocative, or penetrating. It was friendly, chatty, and upbeat, but didn't dig deeply enough or deal with big enough issues...the kind that you never get over. The kind that you need help to know how to get past.

I found that Nancy DeMoss' book Choosing Forgiveness is much harder hitting and hits where it needs to hurt. The good kind of hurt.

Getting Past left me a bit flat and feeling glad that I scored it as a free kindle special.

This book was recommended by a good friend a few months ago. After getting off the phone with him I downloaded the book. What struck me was the section on PTSD, and what happens after you have experienced a traumatic event. Great book. Thank you.
