It's the manual

This is a dry walk through of the functionality of the program. As proudly emblazoned on the cover, it's written by the creator of Family Historian. It's also published by the publishers of Family Historian. It covers all of the functionality of the program in a methodical manner and reads like a manual.

In fact it is the manual.

And that's why I feel a little cheated. To have shelled out 35 quid on the software itself and then having to find another 15 for the manual. They may as well sell the software for 50. But I guess that would probably shift fewer copies.

So, yes, as per other reviewers I have found myself doing things with the software that I'd never have known if it weren't for this book. But that's kind of what a manual is for and, to be honest it should have been included with the software.

A very comprehensive manual, that is methodical and logical. This is very good for a manual, but there are few illustrations and the verbal description is very "dry"! For me, I find it difficult to grasp the logic and then visualise the actions, but for others this book will be a delight. As is often the way, the database, its capabilities and academic "correctness", almost take precedence over the delight of genealogy "detection"! The online forum for the software should also be used in conjunction with the manual, their patience and knowledge is very extensive.

Not really fair to do a book review when you have only had it for two days, and have just skimmed the contents!
I have been a user of Family Historian for at least the last 10 years since release 3, and I suppose I was expecting to see a lot more on formatting and customising report layouts, designing your own reports, changing fonts and styles, etc, and more on the content and meaning of the .fhr files. Similarly, I was expecting more on the data references and expressions while writing queries, and the differences between attributes and events with the same names. One of the features of Family Historian is Plugins, but they get less than half a page. Hence the 3 stars on this book on a 5 star application. I will keep it as a reference book instead of searching through the on-line Help files.

The book is written in a logical way and is structured around a huge tutorial using the sample project that comes with the software. I found that particularly useful as it gave me confidence to try all the functions knowing that I would not be doing any damage to my own data and that the sample project could be reset at anytime if you get lost. It is a good reference book too but the approach by the author is to guide you rather than blind you with the complexities of the software. It was definitely worth investing in this publication.

Family Historian 6 is the best genealogical software I have used though I'm probably only using a fraction of what if offers. When I think I'd like to do something different this book provides an excellent reference guide which has provided answers to all my questions so far. It is also interesting to dip into for a quick read which inevitably throws up something I hadn't known previously.

If you use this programme, this book is a must have! I've been using Family Historian for over 3 years but within ten minutes of having this book I was doing things I never knew you could do. Little shortcuts to make things easier, tips and hints to bring out the best in the programme. Even if you have been using this programme for a while, this book will still teach you something you didn't know. Highly recommend it.

The help instructions are very good on the program itself but the book instructs you in a much more uniform manner.
