Product Description

Film-mad mobster Chili Palmer (John Travolta) goes AWOL from his intended assignment to track down B-Movie producer Harry Zimm (Gene Hackman), who has racked up gambling debts all over Las Vegas. Dazzled by the Hollywood lights, Palmer forgets his debt-collecting duties, deciding instead to pitch in with Zimm to produce a new vehicle for movie star Martin Weir (Danny DeVito). Ties to the criminal underworld are not so easily severed, however, and the co-producers find themselves harassed by Palmer's Miami boss Ray 'Bones' (Dennis Farina) and the equally formidable gangster Bo Catlett (Delroy Lindo).

From Amazon.co.uk

John Travolta is the standout in this somewhat cartoonish adaptation of Elmore Leonard's novel about a smalltime Miami enforcer (Travolta) who decides to get into the movie business in LA. The cast sparkles--Gene Hackman as a failing cut-rate-movie producer, Rene Russo as a failed actress, Danny DeVito as a vain thespian, Delroy Lindo as a mobster who wants a cut of Travolta's film action--and the script is clever. But not clever enough: this isn't Robert Altman's The Player, as far as satires about Hollywood go. But director Barry Sonnenfeld (Men in Black) keeps Get Shorty cute and brisk and that makes for an enjoyable experience. Travolta is great as a vaguely dangerous, supremely self-confident man whose love of movies makes him almost cuddly. --Tom Keogh --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Better than the DVD but not by a lot. This is a bare bones transfer no extras other than a commentary. My disc also has a problem playing chapters 19/20 where it freezes and stop starts. Same on two different players both of which have latest firmware updates. I hope this is not generally the case but best be alert.

Although purchased from a competitor, two copies of this disc had exactly the same fault as the other reviewer described. At around 1:05, Ch18 to Ch19 it freezes up and stutters and does not recover.

Avoid until/if the publisher reissues.

The plot of this film sounds a bit like tarantino, but its not. Shylock Chilli Palmer (Travolta) goes to hollywood, ostensibly to collect a debt but, like everyone else in the film, wants to make movies. The cast is brilliant including the much underated Delroy Lindo, a not-used enough Dennis Farina and a beardy James Gandolfini. Travolta and Lindo both play gangster-types who want to break into production, this leads to some scenes of unbridled comedy. Travolta's character is not a million miles away from Pulp Fiction's Vincent Vega, less prone to violence and a hundred times as clever, but still retaining that greased hard-man image. It is a light-hearted film, brilliant characters, a good plot, an ending that will either have you laughing uncontrollably or holding your hands out saying "Thats not an ending". All in all, Genious.

Get Shorty is a very fun movie. Travolta and all the other characters make it special. The story is great and very well done. I wont spoil it for anyone that has not seen it yet but all I can say just get it as its a laugh and you will enjoy it. Now the quality on blu ray is good. The quality of facial features and other things is more than decent. Compared to dvd its way better.its not one of the greatest looking but 3.5/5 in my opinion. The sound on blu ray is really good too.For the price you cant go wrong. Just get it. Fast Delivery. Great seller. A happy customer here. Thank You

Just read the other two reviews. I can add I have rented this blu-ray three timees from Blockbuster online rental. It is definitely not the same disk as on complaining for a faulty disk they have sent out another one while I still have the other. And all three the movie crashes about the 1hr 5min mark. And it keeps crashing after that so I have been unable to watch the movie after this. I was coming here to buy it for £7 as I really was enjoying the film up until then. But seeing those other two reviews saying theirs crashes too. It seems to be a manufacturer pressing problem. By the way I have tried it on three Blu-Ray players too. Including A standalone premium Oppo player and an LG PC Blu-Ray drive.

This film has a lot going for it. It is based on a book by Elmore Leonard who in my opinion is the best contemporary thriller writer. The leading part is played excellently by John Travolta who is well backed by Danny de Vito, Gene Hackman and Dennis Farina. Typically humour is at the centre of the plot although this is about gangsters! Chilly Palmer (Travolta) a gangster whose ambition is to write for the movies, so moves frm Florida to Hollywood to achieve this but things do not go smoothly as his past catches up with him. A splendid movie.

Based on Elmore Leonard’s novel of the same title this is an exhilarating and entertaining satire on gangsters, Hollywood and gangsters in Hollywood. The plot gets more intricate and complex as the movie progresses but is centred on John Travolta’s Chili Palmer, a film buff mobster out of Miami who travels to Los Angeles to collect a debt and becomes involved with movie-folk and quickly realises that he has transferrable skills which might allow him to forge an alternative career. The screenplay is superb and the sharp witty dialogue is delivered with gusto and enjoyment by all. Travolta absolutely nails his part as does Gene Hackman, Rene Russo and Danny DeVito while it was great to see Dennis Farina doing what he does in his wise guy role as Ray “Bones” Barboni (a much underrated actor in my opinion). Definitely a film to watch, probably more than once, and probably to buy. A classic of its genre.

When I head John Travolta was heading the cast of a film based on an Elmore Leonard novel, I thought 'Tarantino!'. But Get Shorty isn't a Tarantino film, literally or stylistically. Travolta's character, Chili Palmer, is a crook with a heart of gold - he realises quite early on in this film that what he wants to do is 'make movies', and the ensuing cocktail of filmmaking and crime is very entertaining, flirting vaguely with the same ground as 'The Player'. JT is easily as good in this film as he is in Pulp Fiction. And one of the greatest things about this film is that, for once, Gene Hackman isn't being forced to play a ruthless baddie (as he is in 99% of his films) - his character here, Harry Zimm, is a likeable loser.
