Especially aimed at beginners, this accessible book about walking for better health provides specific techniques to maximize fitness. Topics include the mental and physical benefits of walking; how to assess and monitor fitness levels; warm-up and cool-down exercises; walking equipment (especially shoes); injury prevention; nutrition for walkers; cross-training options including weight lifting; and a special section on walking for weight loss. There is also a chapter on issues particular to women, such as personal safety and walking during pregnancy. Concise and uncomplicated, this publication is not designed to be an exhaustive book about fitness walking, but rather a resource for those who want the basic facts. Each chapter includes "secrets" sidebars where Youman imparts nuggets of walker's wisdom in a user-friendly, straightforward way.

Great Daily Plans
on 14 March 2004 - Published on Amazon.com
I disagree with another review that didn't like this book. So many books just give you general guidelines, but then leave it up to you to figure out a plan. I LOVE this book because it gives a very concrete plan for each day. I was definitely fitter and faster after six weeks. Maybe the other reviewer is a fitness expert, but I'm not and don't pretend to be. I loved the practical advice. This is a great book for somebody wanting to get into shape but doesn't really know where to start.

Nothing in this book that hasn't already been said elsewhere. And said better. The author presents the obvious and provides little or no flavoring from personal experience. The quality of the prose is worthy of a high school student. A few pictures might have helped a bit, but even that's doubtful.
