The best piano songs, no matter if they're classical or popular, always depends on WHO performs the songs or WHOSE version it is. That doesn't apply to "The Piano Rolls", because it's Gershwin BY Gershwin. The rolls got his spirit, and it's hard to believe, for example, there's a better version of "Raphsody in Blue" if what you want it's just a piano and "just" Gershwin. Excelent and rare works are here, like "Swanee" and "When You Want 'Em You Can't Get 'Em When...". It's like Gershwin in a good mood playing in a bar in 1927. Don't die before listening to this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pristine sound from almost 100 years ago. 14 Feb. 2013

Not all player pianos were created equal. Most of them merely played the notes based on punched holes that glided by on the vacuum bar. There were no dynamics, no feel. But some of them, like the Duo Art, and the Pianola, were capable of producing fine nuances and shades of meaning within the performance.

George Gershwin recorded many of his spectacular piano performances on these highly expressive types of piano rolls. The quality of Gershwin's music can gain nothing from my redundant praise, however what should be noted is that this set of CD's is truly the best way to hear him play.
The producers of this CD spared no expense in bringing a fresh, living sound to these Gershwin performances. They used computer technology to flawlessly transfer the playing data from the original piano rolls to a disc used by the Yamaha Disclavier 9 foot grand piano. Then they took that piano to a concert hall and recorded it live. Gershwin's ghost? I'll say.

There is another Gershwin piano roll CD out there, and it's quite inferior. Everything sounds rushed, and there are no dynamics.

The sound quality of this CD is unbeatable. The richness of the piano, the pure tone, the open air sound of it, the way it breathes, this is the one you want.

It doesn't sound like some mechanical reproduction of a great pianist and composer. It sounds like a great pianist and composer playing in a fine concert hall and you're in the front row.

You're also going to want volume 2. It's a must have. Both are 5 stars.

I think you get the picture.

5.0 out of 5 stars What's not to like? 21 Mar. 2016

My late husband bought this CD several years ago, and we played it many, many times. I still do. A friend of mine, who is a big Gershwin fan, is having a birthday in May. I bought the CD to give to her as I think it's an outstanding compilation of Gershwin's pieces. Plus, George Gerschwin himself is playing the pieces. What's not to like?

As it turns out, long before George and Ira Gershwin's golden age, when they were turning out musicals with tunes that are still performed today, George (sometimes with Ira, sometimes not) was writing tunes for musicals now forgotten, and recording them on piano rolls. By and large, the tunes on this album have not stood the test of time. Nobody now does Kickin' the Clouds Away, from Tell Me More (1925), or On My Mind the Whole Night Long, from Scandals of 1920.

Not surprisingly, George was a pretty good pianist. However, as one of the negative reviewers points out, George got a lot of assistance on some of these tunes from the piano roll technicians, who added a bunch of notes.

The piano playing on these recordings is fine, but not inspired. It is fun to hear a piano roll of George playing Rhapsody in Blue in 1927, and a good illustration of the versatility of the medium even then. I give it three stars for the music, and an additional star for the liner notes, which are excellent concerning George, piano rolls, and the instruments used then and now to convert them into sound.

Gershwin has been one of my favorites since my mom and dad played Rhapsody in Blue for me on the old record player when I was a boy. Then I saw an AMerican in Paris and heard other works by him and the admiration only increased. To be able to hear him play his songs via the piano rolls is very special and should not be missed.I don't want to compare him to any other composer (Imagine hearing Mozart play Mozart). Not fair. He is a treasure of American music and it is great to hear him playing.
