Between this book and that of the X Documents of Young, one could put both books down and weep for a month. There were people trying to tell England that if Chamberlain would not negotiate, countless fronts would be empowered from within to resist. Esp. Czechosolvakia and Germany itself. Chamberlain folded.
But to argue this point HIS way, he and his minions all thought, Germany has to take the lead. They have to overthrow Hitler by getting rid of him, and then England would step in to help. The result was international paralysis and the rest is written in the blood of millions of people world wide.
There is one other thing that Chamberlaini's cabinet HAD to do: they had to rearm and in 1938 they may not have had enough men and materiel to back up any claim to assist armed resistance inside Germany. One must recall that for the Battle of Britain the British Marshall Dowding had a very small number of planes. So Chamberlaini MIght have been playing for time ... and took the brunt of accusation of his contemporaries and history.... but the other fact was that he preferred a balanced budget to building planes during the 30's so the English did run short .... of more than planes. Soldiers, armaments etc. It is a Gordian knot no one will ever be able to unravel. G Kossow in Fla
