This comes down to one simple factor really. Do you speak German, have a slight understanding of how to apply gender, know a few sentences to get by? If so then don't bother with this as it will do little for you.
If however you know next to nothing & want to start simply & fairly easily then this may well be of some use.
Bearing in mind that there is no 'easy way' to learn any new language, no effort, no results. Having said that this course certainly works hard to ensure things proceed simply & without too much fuss. There are basic sentences that you will be taught such as asking someone how they are or counting etc. The everyday stuff in other words. You are thrown straight in with sentences to learn but a climbing scale of words to learn is offset to some extent by clear repetition. The main words and sentences are also repeated in a handy booklet which saves you having to put the CD in if you just need a quick reminder. Each section lasts about 5 minutes and it's best to follow the instruction of not doing more than one module at a time in oreder to remember what you have learned.
I soon found myself picking up some sentences and as the course progresses so the sentences become more involved and you find words and phrases re-appearing to make new sentences. A nice touch is the breaking down of some words to show what they mean, (for instance aufweidersehen or see you again), which helps keeps the meaning as well as the word in mind. The missing star is because as helpful as it is to learn handfuls of sentences it has to be said that if you really want to succeed then you're going to have to learn grammar and gender which are vital to success in speaking German.
That said this is a simple & easily accessed little course which, for not too great expense, show you whether you wish to really throw yourself into speaking another language. Well packaged & well thought out for a keen price.

I'm in agreement with all other reveiwers in as much as this is...

1. very basic - short and to the point
2. will give you the ability to get by - but not the ability to understand any off the wall responses you get to your questions.
3. will not get your pronounciation absolutely correct - this can only happen in a class unless you slavishly copy the examples.

I would compare it with the Michel Thomas courses on CD - and would go for the Thomas CD's every time. I think you would soon out grow the Collins cd's, but Mr Thomas' are much more comprehensive.

So, get by, but not German mastered.

The problem with all language learning packages is that the people buying them often have very high expectations of what they can achieve by using them. Certainly they are a great way of getting introduced to the language but they are limited in how much flexibility they can offer in terms of the type of material they offer and what level of fluency they can help you attain. As a qualified teacher of English as a foreign language I can honestly say that the best way of learning any language is to spend some time in the country that speaks it. HOwever for the rest of us who can't afford that luxury, items like this COllins set is a wonderful and gentle way to get started. THe benefits of a course like this over taking classes at a college or school is that you can study however much you want, when you want and you don't have to feel self-conscious or intimidated by your class colleagues. This Collins course will help you on your way to develop the basics of language which should give you the confidence to take it further either by spending time in Germany or by enrolling on a formal course. I found the book and cd package very clear, useful and instructive. THe missing star is for the inevitable aspect that you can only get so far before you've reached a certain level of fluency beyond which this package is unable to extend.
However if you are looking to see whether learning German is right for you, you cannot go wrong with this great little set. Well recommended.

Basic entry level German presented in the usual CD and pamphlet manner, (3 cds and a 40 odd page booklet) that covers the kind of topics that language book writers think that people need, such as asking for direction, ordering food and booking hotel rooms.

Personaly I found the CDs rather laboured and quickly lost interest. They apparently use the latest techniques but seemed to follow the usual hear, repeat, example dialogue type model. There is also a great deal of superfluous talking that I found distracting and I found my concentration wandering as it quickly feels like a radio programme and becomes background noise.

Personally I found RAPID GERMAN: 200+ essential words and phrases anchored into your long-term memory with great music. Vol. 1. EARWORMS mbt ( Musical Brain Trainer) much more engaging and delivered fast results whilst making learning almost effortless.

Also beware of the misleading cover splash 'easy to download onto your mp3 player.' This led me to expect at least an mp3 version of the tracks on one of the CDs, but there is nothing. Everything is easy to download to your mp3 player if you know how to rip a CD!
