3.0 out of 5 stars decent pliers and blades... 1 Sept. 2010

I bought this tool as a replacement for my trusty Leatherman Wave, which was tragically lost to TSA this summer. I'm an EMT, and decided on the Flik for the rapid-deployment pliers (for opening oxygen cylinders, etc) and the outside opening blades, again for quick access. In that respect, its a pretty good tool. The opening and closing locks take a little getting used to, which won't be a problem for you once you play with it for awhile, but if you hand it to a buddy he'll probably have issues opening and closing it correctly. The sliding/locking mechanism is a little shakey, but it gets the job done; we'll see if it stands up. The black coating is actually very nice, and feels like bare metal in your hand, unlike the grainy feeling of the Leatherman tools and Kershaw knives. The blades are again pretty ok, the straight blade is ground on both sides rather than just one which gives you a good edge and point. The serrated blade came unsharpened and was dull as all get out, but a couple swipes over a diamond sharpener fixed it up. The scissors are really quite good, which I would expect from a company that makes Fiskars. The screwdrivers/can/bottle openers are a joke. Theyre way too small to be of any real use, and even with the locking mechanism that makes them "pop out" theyre difficult to access. A few miscellaneous complaints/improvements: the small pictures on the sides of the tool are difficult to see, especially when its dark or you dont want to take the time to look at the handle, and therefore in either case its difficult to distinguish the flat blade from the serrated one. I took a small cutting wheel on a Dremel and cut a series of small notches into the top of the serrated blade, so that it can be identified easily by touch (like the Leatherman). Also, like I mentioned, the smaller tools are difficult to deploy. I used the same cutting wheel to put another fingernail notch higher up in the tools, so its easier to get to. Bottom line: for a pair of rapid-deploy pliers, a flat and serrated blade, and scissors, its a pretty good tool, and if that's what youre looking for, I would recommend it. If you intend to actually use it as a tool, buy something a little larger and more substantial, like a Leatherman Wave or Charge.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Flik Action 13 Mar. 2010
By D. Rojas - Published on Amazon.com
I was kind of skeptical to buy this tool because of its size but now that I own one it is not that small but just the right size and weight for what we all use it for. Love the flick action and the locking mechanism of the handles are kind of cool, the black coating has not stained my hands a bit, is on the tool for good and a pretty good finish too. The outboard tools was the #1 most important reason I bought this tool even though they are not that easy to access because of their sizes but with a little practice is not that bad, the knife, saw, serrated blade and scissor are good. Gerber should work a little on the locks for the tools and make them a little rounded edges or something they are kind of hard on your fingers when pull to access the tools also the blades are a little hard to open one handed, they too need some work maybe a little hump on the blades to make the slot bigger for the thumb to fit a little better and then it will make it easier to open one handed. I`m pretty sure you will soon get use to it once you start using it. I personally love the Flick and I`m willing to accept the minor flosses like all the other tools out there. I recommend this tool and I`m pretty sure who ever buys one will do the same.

5.0 out of 5 stars The do it all machine 25 Jan. 2010
By D. Ransford - Published on Amazon.com
I bought this multi-tool as a replacement for my gerber suspension which i had for two years it didnt break it was and i looked for 3 months for a replacement and found the crux and the method. I read reviews and the whole nine yards then a friend of mine showed me the diesel and pro scout i decided to uprgade to that upper class one of the things i really loved about my suspension was the outboard tools and the only one the i liked that had that was the flick so i picked one up on ebay. the day i got it I took it 2 work with me, I am a satellite installer. first thing i liked about the tool was that if you push foraward on the lock release with all the tools down the middle tools open up for easy access. i also picked up the tool kit and added a 35pc bosch belt bit set. I took it and my drill up on a roof only to discover that the tool kit adapter was magnetic it was a big plus for me i used the tool and 7/16 bit driver and was pleasanly surprised. This tool has replaced about 15lbs of tools i used to carry in my belt and when you climb up and down ladders all day thats ends up to be alot. The only tools i now have to carry is my compression crimper, my drill, a craftsman dog bone wrench, and my gerber flick!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love It! 7 July 2008
By C. Birkner - Published on Amazon.com
We have been a fan of Gerber for a long time. My husband saw this one, and had to have it for his birthday. He carries it with him everywhere, and uses it all the time. The pliers are easy to grip, and I have always enjoyed the "flick" action.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Flick Multi tool a good deal. 28 Jan. 2009

The Gerber 22-41638 Flick Multi-Pliers Needle nose is working very well for me this far. It has been about 40 days since I opened the packaging. I have read other reviews of this product and not experienced those reported issues.
The black coating has not come off in my hands and is wearing very well. I have uses mostly the straight blade and needle nose tools, but I have use all the tools and the work just as you would expect.
One little issue I have is the pictures on the Flick are not easily to see. After about 40 days of usage so far the tools are still locking to position and retracting without any issue.
I use this tool for a quick use application, when I do not need to use a wrench or a screw driver I pull out the Flick. This is not tool that you should expect to work as a regular tool. It is a great tool for the little jobs.
This is a tool that every technical should have in their arsenal of tools.
