This factual biography of a well known politician has rather a dry feel about it.It somehow doesnt get across the real George Younger that his friends knew and loved. It may well be a scholarly work of interest to other politicians and those who write about politics, but it didnt cut the mustard for either my husband or I who were privileged to know George as a friend.
This book was commissioned by George's widow and has some inaccuracies, not the least of which was the omission of George's great great uncle (my grandfather) and all his progeny from the family tree shown as page xiii. The story about the Sweetheart Stout can design on page 40 is a load of rubbish. I was sharing an office with George at the time and the choice of the picture of Venetia Stevenson was mine. Torrance also failed to spell the name of the family firm correctly.
