Product Description

Since becoming a vaudeville team in 1922, George Burns and Gracie Allen have made audiences laugh in movies, radio and television. The real-life married couple established their personalities in radio with The Burns and Allen Show and brought their comedy to television in 1950. For nine years on CBS, every show opened with Burns, puffing his trademark cigar, regaling the audience with stories of their vaudeville days... and the latest antics of his beloved wife, Gracie. Often entangled with their neighbours, the Mortons, Gracie's zany wit was always the cause (and solution) to their misadventures of domestic bliss.

As a Burns & Allen afficionado (if you are) you might be hoping for one of two things: (i) an example of how the show got going by seeing very early programmes; or (ii) the best shows from the series. Here you get (i) but not (ii). Two shows, one (The Tax Assessor) clearly much earlier than The Wedding (In spite of the blurb which says they're both from the first series). The Tax Assessor is interesting because its format differs from later shows: live audience, George as an active chorus, a singer introduced half-way through, a running gag about the set (no front wall to the sitting room), persistent and unsubtle plugs for the sponsor (Carnation Milk) and a final curtain call. Not that funny, but illuminating. The Wedding, though not terribly funny either, is recognisable Burns & Allen.

As always Gracie - naive to the point of autistic in her literalism - gets the laughs, but George is indispensable: their timing together is marvellous and the series as a whole remains an all-time classic - ahead of 'I Love Lucy' in my view. I saw reruns of a dozen or so episodes in the States over the summer and I'd forgotten just how slick they were. So buy the dvd by all means, but do so with your eyes open.

This brought back memories of seeing this show - or one of them! - as a kid on BBC in B & W all those years ago and it's not lost it's touch to entertain and comes from an era, sadly missed, when real entertainers did not have to swear to 'be funny'. The timing and the wise cracks are timeless and still funny today due to the fact these were top flight entertainers and so for those of a certain age, this is a must.
