Product Description

Review

With over 100 tips, this handy little book should improve your watercolour technique. I liked the tips for creating low cloud and mist on mountains, shadows, interpreting photos, foliage en masse and so much more. This is a good reference for any watercolour artist. Concentrating on landscape, there are tips for skies, trees, water, snow, figures, coastal scenes and buildings. There are examples of Geoff's finished paintings throughout the book. --KarenPlatt.co.uk

This is the latest of Geoff Kersey's practical painting books and is part of a developing series featuring respected artists who give their unique tips on painting. Initial training in graphic design clearly enhanced Geoff's astute understanding of perspective and proportion, while his natural expressiveness is apparent in his masterly methods of painting atmosphere and detail. Many original features are packed into this handy, pocket-sized book, including: ways of devising colour schemes; reducing clutter to produce stronger compositions; painting shadows; interpreting photographs; creating focal points; finding interesting vantage points; using wax-resist and painting buildings and weather effects. He describes and explains his palette, gives tips on colour mixing and demonstrates many of his own techniques, giving great insights into his personal approach to painting. From guidance about materials and application, to creating weather effects, skies, foliage or architectural details, all the instructions are practical and clearly described. The small, yet handy book is full of delightful sketches and paintings as well as a great deal of sensible, workable advice, making it a book that is suitable for both beginners and intermediate-level painters. --The Artist

This arrived this morning but I already had a copy from the local library. I would call myself an intermediate water colour painter with a lot still to learn even at a basic level e.g. the painting of trees or interesting foregrounds. This book is a little gem with lots of practical exercises which can be followed easily. So many books have demonstrations which might be useful but are nearly always in the later stages beyond the competence of us lesser mortals. The virtue of this little book is that, if you are not feeling up to attempting a full-blown painting - and let's face it, most of us have these kind of days - you can spend a few rewarding minutes practising the basic skills on spare bits of paper and still feel that you have achieved some measure of improvement from each brief exercise. And one of the best pieces of advice anyone can give an aspiring painter is to be aware of the need for regular practice, however basic this might be. Not always possible, of course, but this is where this book comes in useful, in providing the motivation and the wherewithal to carry out this resolve.

Love all Geoff Kersey's paintings. This book helped me to achieve a similarity to some of his pictures. Being fairly new to art generally, I have been able to produce some very acceptable paintings. Geoff really knows how to explain things without getting bogged down with the technical details. Get it. It doesn't cost a fortune and it is invaluable if you want to paint watercolours. Just love this and other Geoff Kersey books. Thank you Geoff for de-mystifying so many things.

I am over 60 and have been a water-colour painter since about 5 years old in an amateur capacity. I am well aware how difficult a subject Art is to teach and how difficult it is to find a good Art teacher (especially for the most difficult medium, watercolour). Geoff Kersey is a total revelation. He is willing to share his experience fully and in steps which can be understood easily. Amazing! This is the second book I have of his, and I am so pleased I bought it. He explain so much, in so much detail. I would recommend this to any watercolour artist - you CANNOT go wrong with this book. Thank you Geoff Kersey.
