Book Description

If you were to guess how a womanising, middle-aged brewer was murdered, you might say he was shot by a jealous husband or drowned in his own beer - not savaged by a horse. Gently unravels one of his most bizarre cases.

About the Author

Alan Hunter was born in Hoveton, Norfolk in 1922. He left school at the age of 14 to work on his father's farm, spending his spare time sailing on the Norfolk Broads and writing nature notes for the Eastern Evening News. He also wrote poetry, some of which was published while he was in the RAF during World War II. By 1950, he was running his own book shop in Norwich and in 1955, he wrote the first of 45 George Gently novels. He died in 2005 aged 82.

Crimes of passion are usually complicated and this is no exception. Lots of suspects, all with reason to kill ( though only in crime novels do they actually do so). Enjoyable as always but rather more contrived than usual and the ending especially so. And yes, guessed who dunnit quite early on.

As has already been mentioned by others, this is not the best of the George Gently books. The body of an ex-womaniser (he is/was now married to a much younger woman who is pregnant) is found on a heath, trampled, so it would seem, by a horse. I had the solution worked out quite sometime before the end of the book. Even so I enjoyed this.

This is the first George Gently book I've read, having watched the TV series first. I didn't expect it to be like the TV series, and it isn't but that's not the problem. The pace is too slow, there seemed to be great sections when I was thinking 'get on with it'. It's also one of the few thrillers in which I correctly guessed 'who dunnit'. I have another one to try and I will give it a go, so I haven't been entirely put off!

The plot was there but very thin, I had worked out the main player as to who had done the deed, but at the same time the ending really badly let the book down, I felt it was unfinished and needed some better plot lines and red herrings, which just were not there!

I really enjoyed this book. Most of the characters could have committed murder and it took a while before I had an idea who was guilty. For Gently fans it's a good easy read.

Was a fairly good read bit hard to follow in some areas. Surprised by the final outcome didn't suspect it to be that couple.
