Product Description

Synopsis

This is a comprehensive handbook of classic and timeless men's attire for every occasion and any time of day for the modern man of the world. Some call it style, others a matter of taste - that certain "touch" some men have that lets them pick out and combine just the right suits, shirts, ties, and shoes. Actually, there is no trick to dressing stylishly as a man. You just have to become familiar with the tried-and-true classics and their history. Peruse this richly illustrated guidebook and take a peek into the studios of the best tailors and shoemakers on the international fashion scene. Read which shirt Gianni Agnelli wears, and what kind of underwear Andy Warhol preferred. In a thoroughly enjoyable reading experience you will learn all there is to know about fabric, cut, patterns, colour, and the optimal care and clothing of a man from head to foot. From the perfectly placed tie knot to custom-made shoes, from casual sweaters to a top hat, everything you need for the appropriate outfit is explained in detail - and in the process, you'll become an expert in the finer points of life.

This is a fantastic book on how to dress in a stylish way, it covers everything from grooming tips and aftershave to the best makes of shoes and shirts. Unlike some other superficial books on the market this has real substance to it, you can actually read this book and know exactly what to go out and buy. This isn't a book on the latest fashions but how to develop a wardrobe that will stand the test of time.

This book gets 5 stars because it is superb value for money – a hardback book of 350+ pages packed with beautiful colour pictures for less than 10 pounds!

Curiously, this book is written by a German, though it is hard to tell if it is a translated text.

I say curiously since Mr Roetzel looks outside of the borders of his own land for most of his inspiration for this work. He speaks with great authority on such prototypes as the English gent, the stylish Italian man and the American matinee idol. The quirky anthropological style highlights the passion the author has for his subject matter.

This book is indispensable to any man who aspires to be a well-dressed gent.

This book is for men looking for _classic_ style, not fly-by-night fads of fashion. If you are a dedicated follower of all the new trends and colours, this book is not for you.

But if you, like me, want to understand the origins of style and get an insight into what should be worn when, and how it should be worn, this book is for you.

It covers all aspects of mens wear, from underwear to overcoats, and does it in a very readable manner. It can be dipped into, or if you like me, read from cover to cover and then read for nuggets of advise when necessary.

This is a wonderful book for those who still care about taste. I disagree with the previous reviewer who said that it should concentrate on the "English gentleman", the beauty of this book is that it is truly international, therefore helping people dress well in a style that is suited to them and their environment. Not everyone can get away with wearing pin-stripes and bowler hats! The reviewer who said that this book only caters for James Bond has got the purpose of this brilliant book completely wrong.

The book is richly illustrated and colourful, but the really good points are scarce, and many topics are only superficially discussed. The style parts are rather uninspiring, and there's a lack of argument behind the fashion-choices presented in the book. Questions like "why is a suit designed like this?" are simply not answered.

Alan Flusser's "Dressing the Man" is a much better choice.

I love this book, it contains a wealth of knowledge and information and is written in an authoritative style that is neather pompus or condescending. It also does not, like a lot of other books on the topic, imply that you should be embarassed for wanting to make an effort with your dress.

With business-like aplomb this book steers you by the brolly through the outfitters, outer-wear and the outrageous mistakes that should not be made in the sartorial department. You could almost consider it a Letts guide to personal presentation. It gives insight into what to look for and how the garments with which you adorn yourself are constructed, types of millinery, how shoes are hand-made and generally gives a well illustrated and delightfully simple guide to that higher form of masculine existence.
Now just to find a suitable lady for pleasant companionship....
