GIVE YOUR CHILD THE GIFT OF NATURAL HEALTH
When your children are sick or injured, you want them to feel better -- fast. Although in some cases there is no substitute for traditional medical care, prescription drugs are not always the best answer. Countless parents are discovering that natural, health-promoting substances can often be both safer and more effective. Now, a master herbalist with more than twenty-five years of experience who is also a mother of two shares her natural approach to wellness. Inside you'll find easy holistic therapies for common childhood injuries and ailments, and learn:
-- how a banana can remove a splinter
-- which herbs help reduce fever
-- how an onion helps both bruises and earaches
-- why garlic is nature's antibiotic
-- how a spritz of rosemary hair juice prevents lice
-- why peppermint tea relieves both headaches and stomachaches
-- how gargling with lemon juice and table salt can ease a sore throat
-- why ginger root can ease motion sickness
-- and many other intelligent uses of foods and therapeutic plants -- nature's own medicine -- to alleviate discomforts.
Best of all, this invaluable reference stresses an approach that helps you teach your children the benefits of preventing illness -- not just treating it.

Again this book works as a wonderful reference, you can stop and read it through if you like but it might be daunting in that way, But reading through the beginning of each section/chapter is helpful as she explains a bit about each of those uses for herbs also the beginning talks about history and uses of herbs etc. This would help give you an idea of what to expect before these things arise and what types of things to have on hand in your pantry and medicine cabinet. There are also some wonderful indexes for reference as well. Those would even be great to copy and print out and put on your medicine cabinet for easy reference.
I am really sad this book isn't still in print but there are always used copies available so I always order a few to keep on hand to give out. I can't say enough good about this wonderful resource. Sure there are others out there that are great too and people may nit pick any book and find something wrong with it. But honestly I think this book is perfect for what it set out to do. It's not an encyclopedia or an exhaustive reference as some may think it should be. It covers enough of everything to really get you going and thinking and understanding the basics of natural care and healing for your family. You can supplement it with further research online and with other great herbal books. But this is probably my favorite book as a studying herbalist and mom and book collector (hoarder!) who has been using these remedies for 10+ years now! You won't regret having this book in your shelf but you may regret if you didn't get it.
Another great book as well to go along with this for new parents as well is How to Raise a Healthy Child in Spite of Your Doctor. It is more of a sit down and read book. Best to read it during pregnancy to get prepared for that mindset so you know what path you may want to follow before your child is here. Especially when you have to consider things such as circumcision, vaccines, prophylactic and unnecessary antibiotic eye drops etc. You may want to consider these things in a different light than the mainstream status quo and what the biased medical system wants you to believe.
So in all these two books make an excellent start for new parents or anyone wanting to learn more about keeping children truly healthy and not in need of constant doctor care. In my raising my two children with these methods and beliefs described in these books I have two extremely healthy children currently 9.5 and 6.5 who have never been hospitalized except the oldest who broke his arm and he had it set and cast and out in a few hours no pain meds needed as I gave him arnica immediately when he injured it and when he got home and that was it. I also gave him bioplasma cell salts and cod liver oil and his arm healed fabulously. Other than that the only issues we have dealt with have been a few stomach viruses. They have not needed any antibiotics ever or any tylenol or other OTC drugs. They don't even ever get colds or runny noses or ear aches, no flu, no weird rashes, no infections, etc. All of their peers we know are constantly sick, go days or weeks being sick, soon as one thing is gone something else pops up. We do not vaccinate at all My son had a few and none since those first few, my daughter has had none.
All parents need to learn about what really takes to keep children healthy. The standard practice of tyelnol and squashing fevers, cough syrup full of food dyes and sugar, constant stream of antibiotics is only making our children worse not better. Never before have children been SO sick. Auto immune disease, cancer, allergies and neurological disorders and SIDS are all astronomical for this day and age. It should not be. And if you look all of those children are raised in the alopathic model of "care". You do not see this in the natural communities who got their children started this way. Believe me or not but I have seen it all first hand in person and through my research and the online communities of parents I have been in since my children were born.
She is a clear, easy to read writer. Her advice is from decades of experience and it works! What better solution to our ailments then that which is found in nature?? The procedures are easy to follow, relatively cheap and easy to administer. She addresses herbs, homeopathy, flower essences, and much more. I am so moved by the success of her advice I am now seeking to become an herbalist myself.
Excellent book; i give it the highest recommendation esp for all caretakers of little kids (although, her advice is also applicable to adults).
Also included are sections that address subjects such as "Healing Imagery," as well as instructions for dosing herbs, where to find a local natural health practitioner, how to deal with toxicity, and even testing for food reactions. Herbalist Candee has created a helpful, easy to use guide to natural healing for parents. --Reviewed by Michelle Smith
