An essential release from the commercial Genesis years. This particular cd is the U.S. release that was released a few years before the Genesis catalogue received the superb rematering treatment from Nick Davies. All the same it does sound very good.I recommend this.

Bashful Genesis album which further ingrains a more sophisticated pop sensibility into Genesis's overall sound. Certainly superior to "Abacab", the self titled disc contains a number of minor classics, and that includes all of the four first tracks of 'Mama, That's All, & Home By The Sea'. What is confidently shown is the dynamic length's that Genesis were willing to explore in this arena of pop rock. Despite the upbeat and heavy tilt on commercialisation, the songs here-in reflect personality and somberness.

This is all briefly eclipsed by the full-on bouncy-ness of "Illegal Alien" :- something I didn't fully appreciate; but anyway, quality is resumed from the tranquil escarpement of 'Taking It All Too Hard', and the almost funky qualities of 'Just A Job To Do'. This ultimately leave's the rather fulfilling and sophisticated 'Silver Rainbow' and the more progressive-like, 'It's Gonna Get Better' to close down the album. The second half arrangement feels slightly inferior but fortunately:- 'Illegal Alien' remains the only obvious sub-par offering..

This 1983 disc sounds fairly typical for discs of this eighties era. A slight distance in production, a little leaning of flat bass, and pronounced meldoies. To these ears, certainly a disc that suffices me when a desire arises to listen to this selection of Genesis, and it remains in my wide collection with the very occasional spin. Personally, I think this disc works alot better than the following "Invisible Touch" as it contained too many hits, and not nearly enough emphasis was positioned on the traditional Genesis esque.

There is both convincing greatness and reliquishing moves on this "Genesis" album. But overall, despite it's weaknesses, an enjoyable listen should ultimately prevail., 3.5 stars.

Together with the "Duke" and "Abacab", this CD proves to be the best Genesis output of the 80's. It, as well as the other two, succeeds somehow to combine their old progressive style with a new sound of the new era in rock/pop music. I don't really care so much about what was produced by the group after these three excellent albums. One thing is for sure - they became too commercial for my taste. Without any doubt, worth having in your collection.
