MONO IS MORE

This is one of the best, least know LP's of the 1960's. If you like Gene Clark's other work, this LP is different but I'm pretty sure you won't be disappointed.

When Gene left the Byrds in 1965, he recorded this LP with the help of the Gosdin Bros and Michael Clarke & Chris Hillman.
So what to expect? Well, it's somewhere between his earlier work with the Byrds and later solo Lps but not quite; more pop plus a little Dylan.

That said, this review isn't about the music, it's about a specific release, the 1990 release by Sony Music Special Products.
Why push a 1990 CD release over Sundazed et al? Well, when Sony decided to re-issue this LP, they decided that the MONO tapes sounded far better than the STEREO ones and they were not wrong, at least to my ears.

Not only does this CD have a punch to the gut missing from even the great Sundazed release but also musical elements completely missing from the STEREO master.

These last minute overdubs are not screamingly obvious but listen to the gentle background oohs on 'Think I'm Gonna Feel Better', the different balance to 'Echoes', the stinging guitar on 'Elevator Operator' and the snappy drum sound on 'So You Say You Lost Your Baby', (the last two aren't different but sound so much better in MONO) absolute killer.

So that's it really, not a version of this great LP for all but if you want to hear this exactly as Gene intended, in all its 1960's glory, then this is the release to buy.

Even the 1990 mastering is pretty damn good, which really surprised me but snap this one up quick because I'm pretty sure that it has now been deleted, so those stocks still around are leftovers.

I get a copy of this lp, but looking my cartridge running through its grooves was like watch a car running through San Francisco' streets. Odd enought the sound was ok, but...what the hell, we are talking about a new LP, not an original release found in a flea market! so I requested a replacement. So, Amazon gave me a second lp... the lp again not totally flat, but at least was much better than the first. I decided keep this copy. Not amazon fault as cover or inner sleeve didn't present any blend (both cases) . I wonder...where is the quality control of MOV???? It's supposed this is an audiophile release.... apparently Music on vinyl fired all their "quality test" staff....

Gene at his best. The extra tracks are wonderfull and the artwork is breathtaking.
Underrated as all his work but for true music lovers a beauty and to learn the power of his lyrics.
Best buy for everbody who enjoy music.

WHAT A DELIGHT THIS ALBUM IS

I listened to the track "Tried so hard" (to please her) in Fairport Convention live album HEYDAY. I read the composer was Gene Clark and I previously believed the song was within his catalogue with The Byrds. I later discovered it was in this album. Got it and... GREAT album. Fairport convention reading of the song is less country-folk but the Gene Clark original shines too. The album adds other great tracks, providing some folk-rock and pop jewels. Another great track is "Elevator Operator", an irony for a girl who keeps you living under a rollercoaster of emotions. The album sounds great, The Godin Brothers provide good support and the album is a gem for those who love good voice and well performed country / folk - rock. It is a superb recording and it is a perfect intro for Gene Clark solo career. I love this album and I play it quite often. Five stars, no doubt. It will please fans of The Byrds, Graham Parson and Simon and Garfunkel.

Gene Clark's First Solo Flight.

As a massive fan of The Bryds I had heard good things about his first solo outing.
It is a very interesting mix of influences of The Beatles, The Byrds (several Byrds present and future help out) & displays some very early country rock.
Stand out track ? Its got to be Echoes, it has to be heard to be appreciated.
The whole album is understated and enjoyable all the way through.

Through a different prism

When in 1972 I paid 40 pence for a second hand copy of the original (and even then long deleted) album, I remember being a little disappointed. The music seemed dated by the standards of Gene's earlier work with The Byrds and certainly did not appear to bear any comparison with their contemporaneous masterpiece 'Younger Than Yesterday'. Since then it has been re-released in different guises, six times! During the early 70's it appeared in a re-recorded form as 'Early LA' - this version had one of the best songs 'Elevator Operator', inexplicably removed. Edsel/Demon gave the original album a UK release in 1988 and then followed this up some years later with an edition that was superior for its extensive information - including a rather touching letter from a female fan to a British pop music magazine. Whilst all this was going on Sony released 'Echoes' probably to compensate for the fact that (the by now late)Gene Clark had been under represented on The Byrds Box Set of 1990. Finally, just in case anyone thought that this music was still being neglected , Sony then released the original version of the album with a single bonus track. And now we have with this latest release on Sundazed, the best of all possible worlds. Bob Irwin's work on the original tapes yields stunning results. The packaging is certainly well up to the standards of the second Edsel release although Gene's poem which had featured so prominently on the back of the original cover has not been included. And as for the music - well to my ears now it sounds much fresher and more exciting than it did when I was an angst ridden student all those years ago - but then that's in the nature of musical appreciation.....isn't it?
