Gears of War, an Xbox 360 exclusive game that blends tactical action with survival horror, thrusts gamers into a deep and harrowing tale of humankind`s epic battle for survival against the Locust Horde, a nightmarish race of creatures that surface from the bowels of the planet. The storyline plays out like a Hollywood blockbuster -- lead character Marcus Fenix pits advanced human technology against the overwhelming Locust Horde. Built around a revolutionary third-person tactical combat system and breathtaking, high-definition visuals from the Unreal Engine 3, Gears of War immerses you in a horrifying tale of war and survival.
The gameplay is focused on a fire team co-op so advanced that your A.I. teammates are indiscernible from human players. Voice recognition and real-time lip synching heighten the absorbing experience. The Unreal Engine 3 technology brings out the smallest details in the largest of battles. With GOW you`re sure to experience a rich, dynamic world where characters spring to life. Speaking of life, the battlefield is a lethal place. To survive, you must suppress your enemy with blindfire, take cover in interactive environments, and use weapons and teammates to outwit your dreaded, inhuman foes. And with a title like GOW, it would be shame if you couldn`t get online and challenge live gamers. With the next-generation of Xbox Live, you`ll be able to experience individualized matchmaking, view player statistics, earn player achievements, customize games, and build personalized gamer profiles.

That's the background story. From here on out Fenix sprints from one cover into the next, throws a grenade into any opening holes and shoots anything that ain't looking like a blue overweight human tank. This basically boils down the game play which is only interrupted by hilariouss military pathos cutscenes, it makes you wanna outlaw anything even remotely military at once.
The weak spot of the enemy seems to be their legs and not their heads though. On the higher difficulties enemy npc can blow you to pieces with one shot kill weapons before you even can say "what the..". Another downside this game has is it's inability to save/reload. It's another stupid checkpoint game, that makes you play the same crap over and over again from an earlier position if you fail or get blown to pieces.
Do absolutely play this in coop as the "aiding computer AI" is as seriously mentally challenged as reviewers praising this game into kingdom come and giving it five stars.
That being said, it's fun. You can do a lot worse spending your lifetime than playing this.
However, this is one of those games that you have to play a lot to really appreciate how damn good this game actually is. I've seen many people moan on about how short the campaign is, I say it is just the right lenght, it took me 6-7 hours to complete the whole game, via xbox live with a friend I might add which is a brilliant idea, however, I do think the story could have been explained a bit more as if you read into the story,, you find it is a very detailed plot.
To online play. In verses ranked matches, again, you have to play the game quite a lot to really get into the game. At first when I played online I thought it was rubbish, everything was over too quickly, it was too difficult, but after playing it for a while I just can't get off the game.
Overall, this is easily the best 360 and next gen title by a mile, nothing compares to the awesome graphics and game play. At £20 odd pounds it really is a steal, an absolute must buy, believe the hype. Astonishing game.
The only thing to disappoint me is that one of the levels in act 2 is now different to what was first shown back in 2005, and I think they changed it for the worst. You now pick up a vehicle which is not really all that much fun to drive, and I think the onfoot action is where the game is at its best. Anyway, just me being fussy really. Overall, I cannot find any fault with this game & it is an amazing achievement for all involed. Will be picking up the next games in the series for certain.
