Product Description

All 13 episodes from the first two series of the critically-acclaimed BBC comedy, written by and starring Ruth Jones and James Corden. Gavin (Mathew Horne) from London and Stacey (Joanna Page) from Cardiff have been conducting their romance online and by telephone for the last 18 months. After they finally meet, they fall in love and get married, despite some last minute doubts. Meanwhile, their best friends Smithy (James Corden) and Nessa (Ruth Jones) also team up. When Gavin and Stacey return from their honeymoon, they soon have to get used to life in the real world, while Smithy learns, to his horror, that he's going to be a father.

Very rarely does a show come along that is at such high quality as the excellent `Gavin & Stacey'. I never watched it when it was on TV but after hearing all of the word-of-mouth hype surrounding it and seeing that it had won some awards, I thought it was time to give it a go and so I purchased the series 1 and 2 boxset and I must say it is probably the best ÂŁ18 I've spent on a DVD in a long time!

The story is fairly straight-forward - Gavin lives in Essex and Stacey lives in Barry, they talk every day at work on the phone and then after months of getting to know one another they decide to meet. Gavin takes along his best friend Smithy while Stacey takes hers, Vanessa. They get on perfectly and so starts the show. Throughout the 2 series all of the brilliant characters evolve and you'll feel like you really know them by the end of it all. I got so addicted to this show that I actually watched all 13 episodes (plus the Christmas Special that my friend had recorded) in just 3 nights and could easily watch it all again already - it is so good!

This show is heart-warming, sad, sweet, and very funny. I can't recommend this highly enough - all I can say is watch it as soon as possible! I just can't wait for series 3 now!

I never saw this on BBC3.. thought it lookeed a bit naff, how wrong i was!
I saw the repeats last christmas and was hooked. I bought both series and the christmas episode and watched them in one day. Hilariuos one liners and witty characters. Alison Steadman and Rob Brydon are brilliant. I laugh out loud every time I watch them!
Fav part- all of it!
I love Nessa's 'whats occuring?' and Smithys greetings to everyone. Very clever how Ruth Jones and James Croyden have selected the characters names- the Shipmans and Wests (very witty in certain episodes)
Loved the christmas episode... very funny and emotional.
Looking forward to series 3 and hope it lives up to the last 2!!!
Ignore the 1 stared reviews.. they must have been having a bad day!

When i first sat down to watch Gavin and Stacey i was expecting an average comedy to pass the time, there are a large number of very poor so called comedies on television however Gavin and Stacey is so much more than trash tv.

I honestly didn't find the show to be a laugh a minute, there are a large number of painfully funny moments throughout both series but ultimately they are few and far between. The reason this show managed ot drag 5 stars out of me is the quality of the writing, the characters and the actors all of whom are superb. It is actually an intriguing drama-comedy more than a typical sitcom like friends for example, the end of each episode left me wanting to know more.

The love story is incredibly sweet and sugary without actually becoming sickening and the parents of both Gavin and Stacey can probably be related to by most people. Nessa and Smithy have to be my favourite characters and there are some stunning catchphrases you will be able to pluck from these two.

As for the comedy moments, they are superb and had me howling! Smithy in particular is the kind of friend i would love to have, challenging but essential! However for me what won me over was the sense of satisfaction that i had watched something more than i was expecting, which has been a long time coming... but most of all it's British!!! Be proud!!

It's strange really, you don't expect comedy like this until you are faced with it, and it always takes a few episodes to click in your mind, and then you wonder how you could have missed it the first time round - well that's my experience with Gavin and Stacey - probably one of the best comedies to have come from the BBC Three stable, written magnificently by James Corden and Ruth Jones.

Gavin (Matthew Horne) works in IT, he's a nice guy who is just your typical bloke, he likes a pint with his mates, a bit of football and women - so when he met Stacey (Joanna Page), a Barry Island girl with a beautiful voice, eyes to die for, and very funny, he hits the jackpot.

His mate Smithy (James Corden) decides he wants to tag along to see how it goes with Stacey - he's a bloke, loud, loves West Ham United, and is a good solid friend to Gavin, and he's paired off with Nessa (Ruth Jones), who claims to have dated John Prescott of all people!

Pam and Mick (Gavin's parents) who try to be posh, are over the moon, and so is Gwen (Stacey's mother, played by Melanie Walters) - but not more than funny man Brin (Rob Brydon) who means well, but sometimes just makes gaffes which make you laugh.

This is a great show, the writing is sharp and very funny, and contrasts well the Welsh and English parents. I found it so funny when Pam makes all these aires for Stacey, when she is used to less luxury at home - and Brin is just so funny. My favourite is Smithy though, he's funny and really a good mate, but he comes in close first because Brin is just fantastic, his funniest line was "always remember to put www though, I try to remember it using a rhyme..." - priceless. There's also a cameo from Sheridan Smith, as Rudy, Smithy's sister, which is so funny.
