If there is anything you want to know about old cinema buildings in the UK, then Allen Eyles is your man!

This is an exceptionally good book, jammed with well researched detail, splendid photographs and oodles of facts besides.

These old buildings are disappearing one by one - what Allen is doing is priceless, recording our local history for future generations.

Allan Eyles is the master of books on cinemas. He fills the books with a marvellous mix of photos history and facts. Here he documents the rise and fall of Gaumont British cinemas. This chain was part of the Gaumont British Picture Corporation. It was largely formed through aquisitions and amalgamations. So unlike Odeon or Granada it never has a real house style. In 1937 gaumont British entered into a gigantic financial crisis as a result of which Lime Grove Studios were shut down.Eventually the Company went into liquidation and its assets were purchased by Rank,It bacme part of his chain of more than 600 cinemas.Eventually Gaumonts became rebranded as Odeons. My local Gaumont at Tally Ho Corner Finchley was i believe the last cinema to operate under the name .I was present when it closed in i think 1981.There are still some Gaumont cinemas remaining in existance.Notable ones being the Gaumont States at Kilburn,Hammersmith and Wood Green. This book is a fitting tribute to a long gone chain of cinemas.
