This is what I would call an epic fantasy with so many characters and so much potential to go in so many ways, by the end of the book I was so invested in them all that it was sad to put it down, I can only hope that there is more in store.
I found it fascinating the way that the various religions and atheists/agnostics had put aside their differences after the war and learned to live apart but together in peace, the book doesn't promote one religion over another but makes the point that we can live together in peace as long as we aren't judging others but reaching out in love and friendship.
Alia and her family are definitely at the centre of the story and she is a wonderfully compassionate and loving person who has suffered so much but still has so much hope, yes there is romance, more than one but I think the one that touched me the most was Alia and Sean who while a stalwart in the book is more a support than a leading man, I would have loved to see more of him as his character spoke so much of love and sacrifice, longing and sincerity.
The young adults are a major part of the story but to mention them all will take to long suffice to say that even the ones who do wrong are made sympathetic and all of them are made very real as you read, at parts I was in tears, but all good books should make us feel, and become a part of the story and in this you certainly do. I would recommend this to anyone who loves fantasy.

"All across the village, people were enjoying themselves. Yet unbeknownst to them all, from the trees outside the village, those gold and blue eyes glittered in the night. They watched until a falcon flew overhead and then they disappeared with a flash.
The falcon watched as well."
Although at first I found the book different to what I had imagined, and it seemed to make me think a lot of Games of Thones. I felt a lot of characters where introduced rather quickly and sometimes I found myself getting lost as to who was who, which I was concerned about at first but it all fell into placed the more I continued to read. The thing I found great about this book is that it touched so many different genres, that I don't think I could pinpoint one genre to describe it! There is a bit of everything in there!!
The story was well written and keeps you hooked and wanting to read more! I cannot wait to see what else S.L. Dearing comes up with regarding book 2!
I received an e-copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.
