The Gathering is an album which sort of creeps up on you. On first contact you're half suspecting another homage to that specific sound redolent of the early 1970s - and if you immediately put it on that pile of all those other 'redolent of the 1970s' albums you own then you'll go away none the wiser. But wait! Give the album time to insinuate and charm - there are rewards aplenty. Yes, there's a heavy folkish influence (no bad thing) and the guitar sound is deliciously fruity but Arbouretem are not in the business of replicating a soundworld which had its heyday some 40 years ago. They've produced a distinctive set of songs and anchored them to a guitar and keyboard narrative which at times is bewitching and intoxicating. Best tracks? 'When Delivery Comes' builds slowly then flowers euphorically - a joy. 'Destroying to Save'- a song which seems to deny that the 80s, 90s and Noughties ever happened! David Heumann's vocals are effortlessly seductive - ditto for 'The Highwayman'. 'Waxing Crescents' - mesmerising martial beat topped off with a dollop of psychedelia - heaven. The Empty Shell - love to hear this one live - fabulous stuff. When that guitar riff and beat starts to go through the gears you'll experience a tingling sensation down the back of your spine.
In short, this album is a revelation. Oh, and one last thing - play it loud.

This is Arbouretum`s fourth album and by now this band has developed into one of my favourite bands, the music still has this folk feeling about it but as often it takes you away into a whole lotta rock n roll thats guitar driven by one of most intresting guitarist around, bass and drums are as tight as a beavers ass,as my english not that good i will keep this rewiev short and just recommend this one to every music lover!

It's not what I thought it would be...I guess one shouldn't put too much faith in the reviews. The chance is probably 75% of people writing these reviews simply haven't listened to enough music to be given the right to provide their uneducated judgement. Too folky for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Album 20 Mar. 2012

I can't get enough of this album. Excellent vocals, superior classic rock sounding guitars, restrained production and very good songwriting. Also, their decision to do a cover of "The Highwayman" was inspired. Best version of that song I've ever heard. The album stands up to repeat listenings too. Top Notch!

5.0 out of 5 stars prog/psych/Stoner rock with English folk roots 5 April 2011
By Charlie Quaker - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
5th album from Baltimore band--hypnotic & compelling prog/psych/Stoner rock with a mytho-
logical bent and English folk roots, led by the Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) influenced voice of Dave
Heumann. Guitar work is top notch, and the arrangements have a heavy, consistent and dense
sludge-sprawl melodic quality that pulls you into the eyes-closed, head-nodding listening mode.
Pure & perfect zone-out rock music. A solid keeper.
