Product Description

Product Description

18th Century England a time of turbulence, when the world was up for grabs, and belonged to those who used both hands. Lawyer, William Garrow, came to the courts of London s Old Bailey where defence of the accused and crossexamination in pursuit of justice was almost unheard of. Bounty hunters roamed the land in search of reward often creating villains where none existed. Judges were in the pocket of politicians and the public gallery of a courtroom was a place to witness spectacle. Garrow would give them that, and more. In the process he will make close friends and powerful enemies with the power to bring him down. Garrow s fight for justice will bring his life to centre stage, and he will have to give the performance of a lifetime if he is to survive. Based on true stories of rape and murder, of thievery and corruption, these are the cases that would shake the justice system to its core. These are the cases of Garrow s Law. SPECIAL FEATURES: Behind the scenes of Garrow s Law, William Garrow: Fact and Fiction, Garrow s Law: From Dawn to Dusk, Cast Filmographies, Picture Galleries, Subtitles

It is so sad that we have only 12 episodes spread across the three series of Garrows Law. Whilst this box set is to be welcomed it is also a matter of regret that the perverse decision was made to axe this very successful programme. What is particularly fascinating is that Sir William Garrow was a real historical figure. The writers of these programmes have clearly made a real effort to ensure that the episodes accord with what is known of his personal life. Additionally every episode is based on a true case from the annals of the Old Bailey, although not necessarily one with which Garrow was involved. Hence they provide an insight into the workings of the law a little over two hundred years ago.

Garrow is not as widely known as he deserves. Whilst this series covers the earlier part of his career when he was a barrister, he was also a Kings Counsel prosecuting cases, although he appears here as the defending counsel. Latterly he became a politician, rising to the post of Solicitor General and confirmed his forward thinking by, amongst other credentials, supporting animal rights which was quite a departure in the first part of the 19th century. This was a time when human rights were fairly generally ignored! The cases which are included in this series are interesting and varied and if you google the details of any of them, you will be able to verify that they were actual cases at the Old Bailey. Here Garrow is the champion of the accused and it is an interesting fact that he originated the phrase 'innocent until proved guilty'. He is also credited with originating the adversarial system of justice, in use in most Western countries with forthright cross examination of witnesses.

Garrow's rather complicated personal life is also based on what happened in real life.

Bought the series on the strength of the cast and that it was a BBC production. This is outstanding period drama. The acting by all the cast is superb, but in particular fine performances are given by Andrew Buchan as William Garrow, Alun Armstrong as John Southouse and Lyndsey Marshal as Lady Sarah Hill. The story line has been cleverly constructed based around the real William Garrow and weaves court cases with Garrow's growing attraction to Lady Hill and all the complications that this brings to their lives. The writing is excellent and the dialogue tight. Highly recommended.

Excellent Series. The chemistry between Andrew Buchan and Lyndsey Marshall was superb. Great Actors. The scripts and production was first-class. It really showed what the Criminal Courts were like in 1700s. I had previously seen the Series on BBC in 2009/10/11 and recently caught the last few episodes on the Drama Channel that is why I purchased the DVD. There were only 4 episodes per Series and more were needed. These could have shown Garrow's further career as he entered Politics and became Kings Council etc. and his family life with Sarah. There are some special features on the Actors and how the Production of Garrow's Law was made - found this interesting. The quality of the DVD was A1. All round - excellent Series. No regrets in purchasing the Video.

Top whole! For the first minute or so, I wasn't sure but after that I was hooked. I finished watching the series within three days and wished for more. Everything: the acting, costumes, sets, atmosphere, everything was superb. What makes it even more so is the fact that it is based on real characters and real cases of the Old Bailey. Accolades galore. This is an absolute must see.

I purchased this set after seeing suggestions for other DVDs when purchasing The Barchester Chronicles (sneaky Amazon!).
Being a lover of courtroom dramas and period productions, it seemed promising.
After viewing the three series, my wife (with similar tastes in period and courtroom dramas) and I were not disappointed.
Acting and stories are excellent.
As one of the DVD extra features explains, the cases were based on actual cases from the time; if not William Garrow's own cases, then certainly contemporary.
Highly recommended.

I do not feel that it is necessary to say anything more about this as an opinion is mine and may not be the same as anyone else. Buy it to find out for yourself or wonder if it would have been to your taste!

amazon could reconsider the value of opinions involving personal taste.

Suggested to me by a friend who had seen it on television. Absolutely loved it, we watched the three series in very quick succession.
