Loved the idea of the story, loved Garrett but could not connect with Olivia. She pulled a real TSTL move 75% in the book but I couldn't really connect with her even before then. I'm thinking it's the 1st POV. I'm not a fan of them but can usually overlook it, this time it didn't work for me. I was also not enamoured with the turn that Zach's life took, he had his happy and I don't like my characters happy's messed with. That said I am still a huge Sawyer Bennett fan and am looking forward to Zach's book.
I always read the after words an author writes at the end, they are instrumental in discovering how an author comes about a particular story or character and I have to say that Sawyer's portrayal of what she was trying to do is absolutely spot on. This book is about survival and we often don't find many books that focus on this when the subject of cancer is involved. So huge hats off to Sawyer for managing to achieve what she set out to do. I think I'm fast becoming a fan of Sawyer Bennett. She is writing characters and subjects with such beautiful honesty and realism that her stories really are worth swooning over!
This book feels personal, and you can see it the whole way through the book. It is extremely detailed and I liked the depth of description, the research that so obviously went into this is so very apparent when it comes to the medical terminology. I learnt a few things from this book and that to me is priceless, I love that!
I loved Alex but I really loved Garrett. He was a secondary character, late to the scene as a transfer for the Cold Fury Hockey team, a ladies man, a real casanova but not an obnoxious, hateful love them and leave them type of man. Garrett loves the ladies but afforded them enough respect that as a reader you find yourself liking his character straight off the bat in Alex. There's one particular line in this book, that when you read it you know for sure from that moment on that you aren't going to get your average, nondescript story about a cocky hockey player. You know you're going to get a book that is going to knock you around emotionally. Hell, I'm all for that. The hockey angle takes a back seat here, though it's plain to see that Garrett is the polar opposite of Alex and absolutely loves his game. That comes into question when he meets and begins his relationship with Olivia. Again, there are secondary characters scattered through this tight knit community of hockey players that are begging for their own story. Stevie adds an interesting dynamic to the friendships that are formed too. Character development is second to none here and you fall head over heels for Olivia and Garrett several times through the course of this story.
It's sad, it's beautiful. Uplifting in places but downright scary in other parts. You feel you are living their story with them. I utterly adored this, loved it very much and I am so eagerly awaiting poor Zack's story. The Cold Fury books are going from strength to strength.
Life and soul of the team and the party, Garrett always has a woman on his arm, sex on his mind and a joke in the air but the joke is on him when Olivia enters his life because for the first time he wants more and she is not having any of his shenanigans.
One chance meeting and he has met his ideal woman, she is drop dead gorgeous but she is funny and sharp, all the required traits to keep this playboy in line. But this sharp tongued firecracker has heard all about his wild ways and his side of the bed is not for her – not in this lifetime – or so she would have professed at one time, but things are different now, she is in the fight of her life and life is for living – so why not have a little fun with the jock!
With no expectations, their one night is woefully inadequate, one night is just not enough. They can’t keep their hands off each other but with Olivia hiding her truth from Garrett you know that the two of them are going to come off that cloud with a bump and it is going to happen pretty sharpish.
Facing up to the fact that she has no option but to tell him the truth, Olivia lays it out for Garret but when he finds out I have to say he shot right up in my estimation because this reformed man-whore – is in for the long haul and this is not a fight he is willing to walk away from and is not one he is willing for them to lose, no matter what it takes.
I think I always knew that he was a good guy under all that bravado, he had it all going on but they all married up into one good old fashioned guy who fell hard for the right woman and wanted to keep her. No half measures, in any aspect of his life up until now and he wasn’t about to start now when he had the biggest fight of his life ahead of him – keeping his woman.
Olivia’s issues are serious but handled with absolute aplomb by the author, she wasn’t afraid to show her fear and to although she did some things that were a little dubious, I had to admit that in her shoes I may have just said sod it and given up.
Although Olivia and Garret are the main features of the book and their journey takes its rightful place at the head of the story I was delighted that we got to spend more time with Alex and Sutton from the first book. Garret and Alex are just top notch, they are fabulous characters and Sawyer Bennett aced it when she put pen to paper and brought these guys to life but I have to say that I am keen to learn more about the new guy – Stevie because his introduction and his first meeting with Garret made me smile from ear to ear.
I am looking forward to the next book in the series, if it is anything like the first two then I’ll hold on to my hat because I have a sneaky feeling that I may be in for a ride and a half!!
