With the eTrex Legend, Garmin has loaded a full basemap of Europe and the UK into one small unit.
The basemap contains lakes, rivers, cities, national highways, railroads and coastlines. The eTrex Legend is also equipped with additional memory totalling 8 MB. The added memory allows the eTrex Legend to accept downloaded map data from GARMIN's entire line of MapSource® CD-ROMs.
The eTrex Legend comes in a brightly coloured translucent blue case that really makes the unit stand out. The Legend comes supplied with PC interface cable, lanyard, owner's manual and quick reference guide.

It will keep tracks of your recent jouneys or you can program them on PC then transfer or make waypoints manually on GPS. You can look by Map, compass guide, or trip data which works great in the car (must have clear sight of sky) or even better on the bike. Use it on bike instead of bike computer as it tells the speed/elevation etc and has maps and a backlight. similar size to mobile phone but much deeper. if you don't need colour I'd recommend it, worth the extra money compared to normal etrex and venture as it has 8mb and displays maps and uploads/downloads. Invest in some good rechargeable AA's!!!
The only let down for me was that the UK mapping is very basic. This is apparant with Magellan releasing an OS topo map for the UK.
And one last thing when are Garmin going to change connection to USB?
The thing I like about the Garmin eTrex range is the size of the unit and the simplicity of the displays. There are five main pages - Satellite page, Map page, Navigation page, Trip Computer and Main Menu page. It's easy to cycle through them and I've had no problem with the thumb stick control. The screen is quite clear and legible and many of the data fields can be changed depending on your preferences. The unit itself is pretty rugged and comes with a cable to connect it to a PC so you can download and upload data on tracks, routes, waypoints etc.
My only real dislikes relate to the mapping aspect. The EU Basemap is a waste of time and inaccurate, as others have pointed out in various reviews. In fact I preferred the Venture screen which had no background at all. If you want reasonable mapping the software for most available packages will cost you as much as the unit itself. Personally I'd love to see something like Anquet maps - real 50:000 OS coverage - on the screen, much as they've done with the Pocket PC range. I live in hope and the lack of decent affordable mapping is the only reason I've allocated four stars instead of five.
However, this is a great handheld GPS and I recommend it to anyone.
Garmin's mapping software is hideously expensive so I use it usually with an OS map. If you are not a great map and compass expert, this will keep you on the right track. So reassuring when it tells you exactly where you are. After a couple of years, thin black bars appeared across the screen but that's resolved itself and the unit works perfectly after lots of use (and no joystick probs, thankfully). Battery life is 6-8 hours max. with rechargeables. Controls are easy to use and the screen is readable even in quite bright light. I have really liked the etrex Legend but... I'm upgrading this week to a 60CSx, yeehah!
