Top reviews from United Kingdom

4.0 out of 5 stars Great fitness tracker watch for my workouts and activities and excellent value for money compared to others on the market.
By James on 7 June 2016
So I had been holding off buying an activity watch since I heard that this one had been announced a few months back. I didn't buy it from amazon as my health insurance allows me 50% off directly from Garmin but wanted to leave an unbiased review here for future buyers.

First off I do highly recommend this watch. I did my research in to what I wanted out of a fitness/activity tracker and this answered most of my concerns.

Form Factor
The watch is very sleek looking but really does look like a sports watch so it's not the kind of thing you can get away with wearing in a more formal capacity. This is a shame as it has 24/7 heart rate monitoring meaning that the intent is to wear it 24/7. It is quite bulky in comparison to some other watches from Garmin and other manufacturers but when you look at the features packed in to it you will understand why. I have the regular strap and I am using a notch on the halfway mark of the strap so there is plenty of room for it. This was a bit of a concern for me when reading other reviews but was quickly quashed when I received it. The watch is fairly light but I have yet to get to the stage where I don't notice it on my wrist.

Activity Tracking
This watch really does have everything I need. I do a lot of casual fitness such as walking, cycling, running and the odd bit of swimming from time to time. When cycling to the office I would log my cycles and it is really great to get heart rate data for it without the need for a chest strap. It doesn't seem to get in the way when I am cycling and changing grip which I thought it might. It also has auto pause if you don't like your time being recorded when you are stationary. On my lunch time walks it continues to log my heart rate and steps consistently (note I didn't say accurately but will come to that further down). There are loads of other activities on the watch that I will be keen to try such as Golf where you can download the course you are playing and it will give you distances to pin and green layouts which could help improve your game I should think. Also included are Multiple skiing profiles, paddle boarding, rowing and the ability to set a custom workout where you can choose to record GPS or not.

Move Sensor
I sit at a desk for a living so having a "Move Bar" is something that was appealing for me. It gently reminds you by vibrating that you haven't moved in a while and when you get up and move around it will clear the move bar. There are times where you may not be able to get up for example if you are in a meeting and the move bar will increase to let you know that you need to move more to clear it. It is definitely a great way of reminding you to have a break from sitting and staring a computer screen all day.

Phone Pairing and Compatibility
My phone is an LG Nexus 5X and I read some horror stories of folks not able to pair their watch to their phone or it losing connectivity. Two weeks ago I paired it to my phone and it has been syncing fine every day since so no worries for me there. Pairing was rather simple via the Garmin Connect application which is free on the Google Play Store. It simply searched for the watch and then a code appeared on the screen of it which I typed in to the phone app and pairing was successful.

Battery Life
This was a very important feature for me as I didn't want to be charging this device every evening like I already do with my mobile phone. In two weeks I have only charged it twice and I get about 4-5 days when using the GPS (Bike Activity) for 5-6 hours a week during my cycles to work and weekend long cycles. Garmin state you can get 7-8 days out of it without GPS and 13 hours with GPS on constantly. I am quite happy getting 4-5 days from it and from what I have read it seems to be standard with moderate use of the GPS.

Charging
I am not a fan of proprietary chargers and I feel that manufacturers should be working towards a common goal of not cluttering houses with a host of charging cables. Also when you are away from home for an extended period you have to bring all of your different charging cables with you. Anyway the charger itself charges the watch pretty quickly (about an hour from what I have seen). Connecting it to the charger can be fiddly but once connected it is quite secure and sometimes I feel I might break the plastic removing it from the cradle. It is charged using 4 small charging contact pins which makes sense considering it is water resistant to 50 metres.

Smart Notifications
When sitting near my phone I get email summaries and text messages alerts through the watch and this can be both useful and irritating depending on how often you receive messages. You can of course turn the feature off or prevent the vibration but I like the idea of being connected to the phone. It also allows you to answer incoming calls but not really in a Michael Knight way where you talk in to the watch. It's more of a feature that you would use when wearing a head set. The fact you can see who is calling rather than just a ringing in your ear with headset is a bonus and allows you to decide whether you would like to answer it or not after seeing who it is.

Apps
You kind of have to use this with the Garmin Connect application if you want to view your metrics in detail and sync it with other applications. Before I got this watch I used Strava and My Fitness Pal on my phone and I was really keen to see that Garmin Connect would allow me to sync to both. This means I can go in to Strava and see all my segments and now have heart rate data too. With My Fitness Pal it will log the rest and active calories which will update your Calories In/Out in My Fitness Pal but it works the other way too by showing calories consumed in Garmin Connect. There are a tonne of other features in the Garmin Connect app which I haven't had a chance to look at and some of the data seems a bit more than I really need but I still think it's pretty cool to have.

Other Features
While I am not going in to all of the features I would like to say a few things about some of the features I use often. The swipeable screen on the watch gives you information on your workouts beginning with a summary of your progress and goals for the day. It also has individual information about your activities (steps, intensity minutes, last sport) which you can view in more detail by pressing the screen. It also has a weather application which uses your phone's location and Garmin Connect to get your local forecast. This has two extra screens which you can click and swipe into, one which has the weather for the next 4 hours and the summary for the next 4 days. It has a magnetic compass built in so you can download a compass app and get a fairly reliable reading - I always like having a compass on my devices :) It has a stopwatch, various alarms which vibrate to alert you and custom watch faces allowing you to change the look - I went for Garmin's Modern Analog watch face.

Water Resistance
The Vivoactive HR is water resistant to 5 ATM (50 metres). I have yet to take it swimming but I have taken my son to the pool, went down various waterslides and used it in the showers without it leaking so far. I have also cycled in the rain with it but I thought that once it had been in the pool a bit of rain would be no problem for it.

24/7 Heart Rate
It is great see your heart rate being sampled regularly but it has a few quirks. Because you are wearing it on your wrist your hand positions change throughout the day and this can cause it to pick up the wrong reading. Also depending on intensity, perspiration during workout can cause it to fluctuate. I have tested it against my old polar chest strap and watch and the chest strap is still more accurate. The watch does show a similar heart rate to the strap so it's not very far out but there is a bit of lag where it would be a few seconds behind the chest strap. I did say it was consistent though and it does show consistent readings quite often which gives you a metric and that's not at all bad.

Step Count & Floors Climbed.
The same goes for the step count. It does things consistently but can be a little out when it comes to the actual steps and floors climbed. There are times where I have walked up 3 flights of stairs to the showers in work and it wouldn't think I have climbed a floor at all and sometimes the opposite where it thinks I have done 4 or 5. It never picks up my stairs at home for some reason either. I do the same lunchtime walk every day and the steps are pretty much the same so they are consistent that way. I have noticed when I am cycling that it logs steps and I would have thought that if I selected the cycling app that Move IQ (this is the software which auto detects activity based on movement) might detect I am cycling and switch this off but alas no.

Overall this watch is extremely great value for money with the host of features and application support you get and although it has a few bugs which need ironed out you should be able to use this watch for all your workouts. It works well as a day to day watch but lacks the look of some of the other watches which can be used in a more formal environment without being out of place such as the Garmin Fenix 3 or Fitbit Blaze. It also is a bit bulky and it can be tough to pull shirt sleeve or jacket over it sometimes.
