Hit the Ground Running
Track your running stats--even when away from your phone. Distance and pace data is captured indoors via the built-in accelerometer plus wrist-based speed and cadence trackers while GPS tracks your run outdoors. You can set up vibration alerts for heart rate, pace and run/walk intervals. Other training features include Auto Lap and Auto Pause. Automatic sync with Garmin Connect Mobile gives you a post-run summary, including calories burned and personal bests.
Get In Gear
The GPS-enabled cycling app measures time, distance, speed and calories. It is compatible with sensors such as speed and cadence (sold separately) plus heart rate monitors (heart rate monitor not included in this model) to measure your progress on training rides as well as daily commutes.
Pair with your smartphone to download course maps from Garmin’s golf database, with more than 40,000 courses worldwide. The golfing app keeps maps updated and tallies hole number and par. GPS measures layup and dogleg distances, as well as distances to the front, middle and back of the green. Individual stroke play scorecard lets you see if you’re under or over par. Measure shot distance at the press of a button. Round timer counts up time on the course, while the built-in accelerometer tracks your steps.
Auto Length accelerometer-based technology automatically gauges total and interval distance, laps, calories burned, session average, interval and length pace and stroke count. This includes number of strokes per length and interval and session averages. Your efficiency is calculated via swolf, which adds the time and the number of strokes it takes to swim a pool length. Interval Count lets you seamlessly pause and then resume your workout.
Step It Up
Garmin vívoactive follows your progress even when you’re not engaged in a specific activity. The activity tracking app tracks your steps to learn your current activity level, then assigns an attainable daily step count goal. The red move bar appears on the display after 1 hour of inactivity and builds when you’ve been sitting too long. Just walk for a couple of minutes to reset the move bar. Set the sleep mode when you go to bed and vívoactive will monitor your rest. It also tracks your calories burned.
Garmin vívoactive gently vibrates to alert you to all the same notifications you receive on your compatible Bluetooth-enabled device. This includes incoming calls, texts, email and calendar reminders as well as notifications from Facebook, Twitter, other social media and mobile apps. You can also control the tunes on your music player, locate your phone and let your friends and family track your activities in real time with Live Track.
Garmin Connect - See A Complete Picture of Your Activities
Garmin Connect is a free online portal where users can track your progress, see a breakdown of individual workouts, sleep patterns and trends, join online challenges and earn virtual badges for extra motivation. Golfers can also see their scorecards and golf stats online to better understand their game.
For detailed calorie tracking, users can link their Garmin Connect account with MyFitnessPal to compare calories burned to consumed and see their net count for the remainder of the day based on goals set in MyFitnessPal.
Garmin Connect is available via desktop or compatible mobile devices. Throughout the day vívoactive automatically syncs with paired mobile devices through the Garmin Connect Mobile app, so users can see a complete picture of your daily activities.

So what annoys me about the iWatch specs? No GPS so you need to carry your iPhone too if you want to run with it (wait for next year's big premium iWatch2 that includes in-built GPS!) So a GPS run on Strava using the iWatch is going to carry on over-estimating how far I have run every time (e.g., 13.8 miles for a 13.1 Half-marathon, iPhone 4s). The Apple premium price. And short battery life (every day charge... for a blinkin WATCH!).
I then saw the new Garmin Vivoactive and felt it was the perfect replacement for my old Garmin Forerunner 110 (nice piece of kit but the strap broke and locking onto GPS seemed to take longer and longer). It also syncs with the 110's HR monitor. For me, the Vivoactive is a near perfect piece of kit. Accurate GPS. Options for running, biking, AND even the golf functions too. Oh, and steps for your 10,000 per day goal plus various other apps and options if you want. Battery life of a month in watch format, and 8 hours of GPS. It's always on. It syncs with my iPhone so I get a buzz when a text or email comes in and it shows the message. It syncs my notifications too, and Apple diary. It has only a few apps at the moment but these are perfectly adequate for a watch!
In short, I think if you are keen on decent GPS for physical activity it's streets ahead of the iWatch at just over half the price. With the considerable bonus that it does the nifty things the iWatch will do in terms of alerting you to (and showing you) texts, etc. Any negatives? Well the screen is a tad dull in normal mode (you can press a button to get a backlight boost) but I'd rather this and keep the battery life. And they have done something clever with the materials so that it appears to get brighter in the sun. Um... that's all I can think of at the moment.
Hope this helps!
I first bought this to replace a vivofit band, which was good but I also had to wear a watch. When the Vivoactive arrived I was impressed with the build quality and looks, my only initial disappointment was the rather dim screen. The device was easily set up and synced with the garmin connect app on my android phone, after an initial firmware update I was ready to go.
I primarily wanted the watch to monitor my daily dog walks as well as my daily step count. My initial worries about the rather dim screen were unfounded, as the more sunlight there is the easier it is to read, in fact once outside the screen is admirable even with direct sunlight. I have since downloaded a watchface with a light background, which facititates reading in dimly lit rooms without using the backlight.
The daily step counter is very accurate and the stride lenght can be adjusted using the app to get the distace walked accuracy near perfect. I adjusted it by compairing the distance recorded using the gps log , and then adjusted my stride length over the course of a couple of walks until it was nigh on perfect.
The smartphone notifications are adequate, I can quickly check the content of incoming emails and messages without the need to retreive my phone from my pocket, handy hen outdoors walking. Please note this is not a smartwatch in the full sense of the word but more an excellent activity tracker with smart notifications.
There are a good choice of downloadable watch faces and many widgets and applications, but appart from a couple of watch faces I nfind the included apps more than sufficient.
The battery life is to be applauded , just using it as an activty (pedometer) tracker ,I would imagine 21 days could be achieved. Using gps for 2 hours per day I need to charge every 6 days or so. Charging tkes around an hour in the supplied cradle, which is magnetic to keep the watch securely in place.
I am 60 years old and as such I don't partake in strenuous sports, but my son in law does,so Ibought him a vivoactive for christmas. He is a keen triathlete and he cycles daily. He hasn't taken off this watch since ,other than to charge it. He has owned many gps devices, he reckons this is by far the best and is also suitable to wear with his business attire during the week. Something other sports trackers can't emulate. HGe was particularly impressed with it'spefomance in the swimming environment, both pool and open water.
GOOD LOOKING, SMART ,LIGHTWEIGHT.
EXCELLENT BATTERY LIFE
TRACKS MULTIPLE SPORTS
VERY DETAILED SMARTPHONE APP
NO PROBLEMS WITH PAIRING
MANUFACTURER ISSUES REGULAR OTA UPDATES.
A LOT OF BANG FOR YOUR BUCK
WHAT'S NOT SO GOOD
RATHER DIM SCREEN WHEN VIEWING IN UNLIT ROOMS
NO BUILT IN HEART RATE MONITOR
NEEDS A SCREEN PROTECTOR TO STOP SCRATCHES AS THE SCREEN IS PLASTIC
THE BACKLIGHT SHOULD BE MOTION ACTIVATED OR BY TAPPING THE HOME SCREEN
NONE OF THE ABOVE SHOULD BE CONSIDERED DEAL BREAKERS.
If you are in the market for a very capable sports watch with smart functionality, then give this device a good look.

Some times it does log all of my steps but it seems this is when in carrying something and so my arm is not in motion.
