Join The Movement--Find Fitness In Everything You Do
Hit the Ground Running
Track your running stats--even when away from your phone. Distance and pace data is captured indoors via the built-in accelerometer plus wrist-based speed and cadence trackers while GPS tracks your run outdoors. You can set up vibration alerts for heart rate, pace and run/walk intervals. Other training features include Auto Lap and Auto Pause. Automatic sync with Garmin Connect Mobile gives you a post-run summary, including calories burned and personal bests.
Get In Gear
The GPS-enabled cycling app measures time, distance, speed and calories. It is compatible with sensors such as speed and cadence (sold separately) plus heart rate monitors (heart rate monitor not included in this model) to measure your progress on training rides as well as daily commutes.
Pair with your smartphone to download course maps from Garmin’s golf database, with more than 40,000 courses worldwide. The golfing app keeps maps updated and tallies hole number and par. GPS measures layup and dogleg distances, as well as distances to the front, middle and back of the green. Individual stroke play scorecard lets you see if you’re under or over par. Measure shot distance at the press of a button. Round timer counts up time on the course, while the built-in accelerometer tracks your steps.
Auto Length accelerometer-based technology automatically gauges total and interval distance, laps, calories burned, session average, interval and length pace and stroke count. This includes number of strokes per length and interval and session averages. Your efficiency is calculated via swolf, which adds the time and the number of strokes it takes to swim a pool length. Interval Count lets you seamlessly pause and then resume your workout.
Step It Up
Garmin vívoactive follows your progress even when you’re not engaged in a specific activity. The activity tracking app tracks your steps to learn your current activity level, then assigns an attainable daily step count goal. The red move bar appears on the display after 1 hour of inactivity and builds when you’ve been sitting too long. Just walk for a couple of minutes to reset the move bar. Set the sleep mode when you go to bed and vívoactive will monitor your rest. It also tracks your calories burned.
Garmin vívoactive gently vibrates to alert you to all the same notifications you receive on your compatible Bluetooth-enabled device. This includes incoming calls, texts, email and calendar reminders as well as notifications from Facebook, Twitter, other social media and mobile apps. You can also control the tunes on your music player, locate your phone and let your friends and family track your activities in real time with Live Track.
Garmin Connect - See A Complete Picture of Your Activities
Garmin Connect is a free online portal where users can track your progress, see a breakdown of individual workouts, sleep patterns and trends, join online challenges and earn virtual badges for extra motivation. Golfers can also see their scorecards and golf stats online to better understand their game.
For detailed calorie tracking, users can link their Garmin Connect account with MyFitnessPal to compare calories burned to consumed and see their net count for the remainder of the day based on goals set in MyFitnessPal.
Garmin Connect is available via desktop or compatible mobile devices. Throughout the day vívoactive automatically syncs with paired mobile devices through the Garmin Connect Mobile app, so users can see a complete picture of your daily activities.

Using it with a heart strap provides the most benefit as you can then use the resulting data to track your progress more accurately in Garmin Connect, Training Peaks, and Strava. The accuracy of the GPS is one of my favourite features and especially so in regard to running and walking, which is far more accurate than my iPhone.
The smart actions of connecting to your phone are useful, as it can alert you to messages, email and news headlines etc. I initially thought this was a bit of a gimmick, but it actually helps me to avoid picking up my phone every time it pings and allows me to filter what I respond to.
It has performed so well that when it finally gives up the ghost then I will be upgrading to the latest version.
I primarily purchased this watch as a way of recording my cycling activity as well as general day to day footsteps and was looking for a bigger screen that could display notifications from my phone. The reason I picked this watch in particular is that it has GPS built in, rather than syncing o a phone and relying on its built in GPS (from experience I have found the bluetooth connection between watches and phones cannot always be relied upon when out and about).
The connection between this watch and a phone is simple and reliable using the garmin connect app (I have a basic motorola smart phone). This app also allows you to download new watch faces and independent (not just garmin apps) which is a major selling point compared to other fitness trackers. The battery life is long, lasting over a week if just using for footsteps and notifications, although GPS shortens this depending on the length of the tracked session (I found an hours cycling uses about 20% of the battery). Data from cycling, I have found is accurate, providing good read outs of speed, calories burned and distance travelled (you can also view maps of your route in the app later on).
The watch also has a wealth of other features including running monitors, golf monitoring, swimming monitoring and a 'find my phone' app. Notifications are reliable and the big screen allows you to scroll through longer notifications on the watch without having to receive your phone. You can also accept/reject incoming calls, but will have to take them on your phone if you choose- still a goof feature if you are away from your phone/have it in your bag as it avoid missed calls or can silence it quickly. As other reviewers have pointed out, it is primarily a fitness tracker but the hybridisation with some smart watch features give Garmin a huge lead in my mind making this a watch that is useful to wear all the time, not just for exercise. This is supported by the fact that it is extremely lightweight, comfortable to wear and fairly smart looking so that it goes with most outfits. I even understand that different straps can be purchased although I have not tried this myself.
Overall Verdict: Reliable gadget that provides useful information during a range of activities as well as day to day life and crucially, functions well independent of a synced phone due to its in built GPS.
