So, after a few seconds to fix the sucker it was time to register and download the software.
Garmin Express is the software to download but any attempt to register on the website will prompt you to download Express anyway. The program downloaded and installed quickly and without a hitch and was self explanatory. It does offer you a quick tour but it's so straightforward you won't need it. It then showed several updates: a map update and some software updates. Took 4 minutes to complete.
Time to try on the open road. The widescreen is quite helpful as you can turn all the options on in the display so this includes the speed limit, arrival time, distance remaining. At relevant motorway points it shows land assist so you know you are in the right lane. I downloaded a couple of the extra pointers just to try it and they work fine, so do the extra voices packs. It has the option to avoid unpaved roads which is a nice touch and it hasn't caused me to go astray yet.
Many years ago I had a Garmin which I categorically hated but having seen recent reviews of TomToms which seemingly have issues over software/map updates, I thought it was about time I tried a new one. If a USB lead was attached then I'd give this 5 stars as it's cheap, easy to use, and the software had no problems.
One surprise I didn't find mentioned at the time of purchase was the fact that it doesn't make a noise to tell you when you're over the speed limit... the speed sign on the screen flashes red but there's no audible sound. I now know this is common with some Garmin models but it is still something I would have liked to have known at the time.
Nevertheless I still love this sat Nav and I've found being able to hunt on the map and select a spot manually to save as a favourite very helpful being a football coach travelling to loads of fields with no real postcodes. Street names is a helpful feature and the menus are very easy to navigate too. I also found the ability to rename favourites very handy for the same reason as above although I'm assuming that's a common feature nowadays.
Another quick point is the fact that you have to set something as a via point if you wanted to avoid a certain road on a journey. For example, if I wanted to avoid a narrow road I know isn't an easy drive even though the Sat Nav is recommending it I'd have to set something on the route that I'd like to take as a via point so it's follows that path. This is all very easily done though and the option in the settings to simulate your route at home helps here too!!
Also worth noting the estimated journey time seems to assume you will be traveling at the speed limit constantly without stopping very often... Google is much more accurate here.Read more ›
