This is a newer model which is part of the updated "Essential Series". Don't expect a revolution in terms of features (still very much entry level for Sat Navigation), however you do get a bigger screen which is now a nice large 6 inches.
Software across all the models is the same, where they differ is in terms of features.
Quick summary on the main points of the 65LM
+ Good value for a larger 6" screen with lifetime maps and updates
+ The 6" screen is quite sharp (800 x 480 pixels) and easy to read, it's ok even in bright light (they have improved a bit here)
+ You do get the "Trip planner" which is handy for longer multiple waypoint journeys (the super budget models lack this) and the trip log which shows the routes driven on the map
+ Option to expand memory via micro SD card
+ Speed limit warning, both visual and audible (you can turn the sound off if you wish some hate it) And safety camera alerts
+ Points of interest search option, tourist attractions, hotels, petrol stations, restaurants, shopping centres, simply enter the POI mode and you can select what you are looking for and it will show you a list of these and directly navigate you to them once selected.Read more ›
Devon maps need some attention as the pace of road building here is clearly outpacing the map providers attempts to keep their maps up to date.
The Gamin Express software is a bit hit and miss. I needed to do a serious tidy up of my Windows C: drive in order to do a map update as the software dumps huge temporary files on it (and doesn't tidy them up) even though you tick the button to only install the map to the device. I needed to free up about 7GB to do the map update, which is 2x the size of the actual map!
Make sure you order a 4GB microsd memory card to be able to update the W. Europe map, which almost fills the device.
On the plus side, the screen is good and the lifetime free maps and traffic are a real bonus. I stopped updating my old TomTom because the maps cost a fortune each time. It was cheaper to buy this Garmin than keep paying for updates to the TomTom. The Garmin software seems no worse than TomTom's so I guess that both manufacturers have some homework to do here.
Then, the Garmin indicated the A66 was closed just east of Penrith and wanted to divert me down the A685 to the M6. However, there were no signs warning of a road closure and I sailed through to Penrith. Only to find, just east of Cockermouth, the A66 closed. Again, the Garmin was unaware of this and kept trying to get me back as quickly possible.
So, we eventually arrived home at 45mins later than predicted and very frustrated.
I contacted Garmin for an explanation but have just had standard answers suggesting I check for updates or reset the unit.
One of the reasons I bought this unit was for the traffic updates and, on the basis of my experience, they are a waste of money.

Clear screen and directions.
However, regardless of how much you set it to main roads it often insists on taking lonely back roads. Read more
